The government has hired 48 new workers at the Public Works Department as part of efforts to accelerate road repairs across the country, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced.
Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show, Browne said the additional workers will be trained and deployed to strengthen road maintenance crews, particularly in response to concerns about the pace of repairs.
“In fact, just yesterday… Public Works would have taken on at least 48 young people… especially when it comes to patching the roads,” Browne said.

He acknowledged that roadworks have not been progressing quickly enough in some areas, but said the new hires are expected to significantly boost capacity and improve response times.
The Prime Minister also sought to assure the public that funding is not a constraint, stating that the government has the resources needed to carry out the work.
“Money’s not an issue… we have more money that we can spend right now,” he said.
Browne said road repairs will continue beyond the election period, dismissing suggestions that the recent push is temporary.
“This is not a little flurry of action… we’re going to continue with the same or even greater intensity after the elections,” he added.
He noted that multiple contractors are already engaged across constituencies and that the government is focusing on more durable infrastructure, including the use of concrete roads in communities to better withstand flooding and extreme heat.
While apologising for disruptions caused by ongoing works, Browne said the aim is to systematically address road conditions nationwide until the issue is fully resolved.

This is considered spamming.
They are temporary until the election done then you come on your radio and scold and condemn them as unproductive and lay them off.
Lordy, Lordy, if this PM is so confident that he has done so well during his term why all these things happening now. This is demonstrating that he is not at all certain that his stewardship has impressed the people hence the sudden rush and all the give-a-ways. What is unfortunate is most of the people are really not seeing through the deception. Antigua (not so much Barbuda) is under the spell of a CHARLATAN and a NARCISSIST
Are the same 2 or 3 road works pictures in circulation because when I lived there full time January 2019 to Fall 2025 I saw so many ups and downs with the roads… but they were so bad when I was leaving for work/business in the States. But I knew in the weeks I would come visit my home, every 2 or 3 months that I would see improvements. And I DID NOT. I was so, so disappointed in this last visit! As I’m going to ABTB to renew my annual car license, I’m 🤔 thinking… what’s ALL THIS EXCESS money going to for the roads to be in WORSE CONDITION than before Fall 2025!!??
And trust me I know every patch, man 🕳 hole, and pot hole because I have a sports car that nearly touches the ground… and while I’m there in February I found NEW ONES and was annoyed bc they’re all bunched up next to old ones… riddled across many main roads! With that said, I can’t or “shan’t” reasonably go on any unpaved roads unless I slow roll slower than someone can walk… for EXAMPLE, the roads in Jennings on the way to Hermitage and Pearns…. we were given a Timeline in August and announcements that it would be done… was that a LIE!??! Bc I really want to build off of that road and REFUSE to invest or buy land there until the roads are repaired!!
Stop the pictures and lying 🤥 about the roads being done, this n that! I’ll believe it when I see it!!!
By Mays end I will be there again to celebrate birthdays and I expect to see SOME CHANGE ANY positive changes, especially with everyone charading around as if they’re the better candidate, well… let’s all play that game and use the “plenty of money” you have from all the increases in taxes and transportation fees to ACTUALLY FIX THE ROADS… I love Antigua. My daughter is a natural born citizen, I try to get my other family to go there to visit and they rather not… why!? Bc of the ROADS!! We have beautiful beaches, yes, but once a first time visitor comes, the roads change their minds. The mess turns them off. They want to see clean roadways, gutters, railings, lines on the roads for safety and even improvements in public safety with displayed speed sensors, cameras and road signs, side walksor board walks, etc. Paving is one aspect, but at least ACTUALLY get that going instead of posting on media that you’re doing it and actually, you’re not!! Seeing is believing with this one. So, I guess we shall SEE! Next month for that… SMH.
And congrats to the 48 men and women who have gainful employment. Create more jobs, it’s the blessing many families need!! Stay blessed everyone… 🙌🏽 🙏🏽
