Government explains what became of the hyperbaric chamber, donated in 2018 by the Calvin Ayre Foundation

9

The government is uncertain when a specialist will arrive on the island to repair the hyperbaric chamber.

The hyperbaric chamber, donated in 2018 by the Calvin Ayre Foundation, is the main method used for treating decompression sickness, which occurs when dissolved nitrogen gases form gas bubbles in the bloodstream due to rapid changes in pressure.

The country’s sole hyperbaric chamber has been inoperable for years, and the equipment needs calibration before it can be used safely.

A chosen expert to resolve the issue has either contracted Covid or was afraid of contracting it, but is willing to travel soon.

The government did not look for any other specially trained experts, as the manufacturing company had selected that individual.

Last month, two individuals received treatment in Guadeloupe for decompression sickness, highlighting the urgency of the situation, as untreated symptoms can result in paralysis or death.

  1. Please 🙏 don’t disrespect the World Bo$$ by bringing up old news. Antiguans we love to suffer. 10 more years ! Then Maria ! Then the Boy ! Red 4 Life !

  2. So Mr. Calvin donated a Hyperbaric chamber then still had to fly out it’s would-be patients to Guadeloupe…shameful. We took a donation and turned it into a burden to the man.

  3. Is this why dive operators cannot access full insurance coverage?
Seems islands with working hyperbaric CAN still access full padi or similar insurance.

Presumably the decrease in coverage for dive operators results in less business = less tax income.

Incredible the chamber has been inoperable ‘for years’. Did ministry of health ensure the regular calibration and servicing were carried out to a strict schedule? One would imagine minimum 2x per year.

Sadly, Antigua has a long history of shiny new ‘gifts’ and minimal, if any, care/maintenance once gifted.

  4. This is completely unacceptable. All we get from this failing administration is excuses. Where are all the medical benefit millions that you collect every month? Do we have anyone here who is can perhaps repair this equipment? The guy Shak perhaps? What about the clinics in disrepair? Government facilities with mold? Police stations? Are you going going to make excuses for them too? This is just the most pompous, arrogant bunch of misfits passing for government.

  5. This government’s incompetence is growing on a daily basis.

When you think that this island has a number of deep sea divers that range from those that catch plenty of deep sea creatures, and those entrepreneurs that conduct diving schools for our thriving tourism market, this lack of foresight by the ABLP government in keeping this life saving equipment operable is deplorable.

I’M A LAY PERSON IN THESE MATTERS, BUT EVEN I KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A HYPERBARIC CHAMBER AVAILABLE TO DEEP SEA DIVERS IN ANTIGUA.

Why accept this gift if you don’t have the wherewithal or the capability to keep it maintained?

… AND BTW, WHAT A SURPRISE THAT MELFORD ‘ASTRAZENECA’ NICHOLAS WAS INVOLVED!

  6. So why must they always blame something on COVID!? I had constipation this morning, maybe I should blame COVID for that too! Smh

    • Stick to the subject on the hyperbaric chamber – have you come on the wrong thread by any chance @ Two Sides?

  8. Who is trained to operate and maintain the Hyperbaric Chamber? How many times has it been needed? Here you have expensive equipment that will be unused most of the time. May make more economic sense to send people to Guadeloupe.
