The necessary funds for planning and executing the upcoming by-elections in the St. Mary’s South constituency have been allocated by the Cabinet. During Thursday’s Post-Cabinet Press briefing, Cabinet spokesman Lionel Max Hurst mentioned that the exact amount was not provided but was based on a budget presented by the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC). This funding represents the requirements for conducting the by-election.
The specific date for the by-election has not been determined yet. Hurst mentioned that the latest possible date for the by-election to be called is October 26, 2023.
Furthermore, individuals who have recently turned 18 years old and wish to participate in the by-election have until July 31, 2023, to register and have their names added to the List of Electors.
A representative from ABEC stated that the July 31 deadline allows sufficient time for the commission to carry out the mandatory Claims and Objections process and publish the List of Electors for that constituency. The commission will likely reactivate the team that oversaw the general elections in that constituency, with Denise Parker likely returning as the Returning Officer. However, additional training will be provided to ensure that the officers conduct the by-election in a highly efficient and professional manner.
In the meantime, the Cabinet expressed gratitude to two individuals who retired from the Commission: former Supervisor of Elections Dame Lorna Simon, who served in the position for over two decades, and ABEC member Nathaniel Paddy James, who retired in February of this year upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75.
