The sudden passing of Vaughn Walter, OBE has come as a shock to the nation of Antigua and Barbuda. For the past ten years, he served as Director of Culture and approached his responsibilities fearlessly – with perseverance and a will to succeed.
He was passionate about the preservation and exposition of Antigua and Barbuda’s culture locally, regionally and internationally. He embodied our history and heritage through his involvement in areas such as singing, acting, costume making and design, playing mas, and musical composition.
He was a people’s person, always jovial and friendly. He inspired everyone with whom he came into contact, urging them always to have a positive view about life. He was enthused about leading the charge for our nation’s hosting of Carifesta in 2022, and was poised to ensure that this investment resulted in a monumental outcome. Sadly, his life was cut short.
Vaughn has been my patient and friend for many years. We spent a considerable amount of time discussing a myriad of topics – from politics, to health, to world affairs.
On behalf of the nation of Antigua and Barbuda, and on behalf of my family and myself, I extend sincerest condolences to you and to the entire Walter family on the passing of your loved one. May God grant you comfort at this time of bereavement.
