“The local sporting fraternity has lost an icon”!

This,  according to the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, when he learned of the sudden passing of Mr. LeRoy N. Ashton Williams. He described him as a man who was highly passionate about his family, sports and business. He was also known for going above and beyond the call of duty to achieve his goals. Through his Pioneers Sports Club, he transformed many athletes from being mere participants into medal winners in the local and regional spheres.

Mr. Williams served as Secretary General when His Excellency served as President of the National Olympic Committee. Together, they represented Antigua and Barbuda at many regional and international sports conferences. The Governor General recalls that Mr. Williams was very well known among his peers, some of whom he competed against when he represented Trinidad and Tobago as an athlete.

The contribution made by LeRoy Williams will remain etched in the minds of many athletes. It was therefore no surprise that in 2006, Mr. Williams was conferred with a National Honour and inducted as a Commander of the Most Precious Order of Princely Heritage for his contribution to Sports.

His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, who also described LeRoy Williams as his friend and patient, expressed sincerest condolences to LeRoy’s wife Yvonne, his son Arden and his family members who are left to morn his loss.
