General elections appear to be near, as ABEC is directed to order ballot paper; UPP will not be caught off guard this time

Predictions that general elections will be called by the end of this year, 2022, have been confirmed by Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who says he has instructed the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) to order ballot paper.

Regional pollster Peter Wickham has said he believes that elections will be called in November or December. And when the question was put to Browne on Saturday, July 16, he had this to say about the prediction.

The Labour Party is yet to stage a campaign event. However, following the Carnival festivities, Browne says, it will ramp up its electioneering, as general elections are only months away.

He claims his party is ready for the impending polls and has already begun to print election paraphernalia.

Meanwhile, the United Progressive Party (UPP) has been in campaign mode since 2020, when it rolled out its candidates. It staged a number of virtual programmes to engage the public during the COVID-19 lockdown and, more recently, at least seven political rallies to energize its base.

The Party says it will not be caught off guard this time around and has been calling on Browne to name the election date.

  2. I predict that the Prime Minister will call the election around mid August or early September.

    It makes sense to the ABLP, because at this moment in time, they have made a lot of promises and created an ILLUSION that all promises will be completed in the not too distant future.

    He’s created these illusions with promises of paying overdue wages and overtime (back-dated); affordable housing; paying pensioners on time; an end to power outages; and the island wide water system by 30th September 2022.

    Gaston Browne fooled the electorate twice and was re-elected on the above ILLUSIONS, as this popular saying goes:

    “Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me”

    But remember citizens of Antigua, here’s the definition of the word ILLUSION in the dictionary:

    ‘A deceptive appearance or impressions’

    I’ll also add to the previous popular saying: “fool us thrice, an’ things will not be nice”

  6. Local private contractors and suppliers needs to be paid. They are complaining that they and their families are suffering. Going to the treasury weekly and come out empty handed. UPP tell us that you are going to do about this issue. The none payment to the local contractors and not a chosen few. The last time All the same people did was switch allegiance and government changed but things remained the same.
