Gemma Handy remembers Ken Richards as one of the finest broadcasters the region has produced

Observer Editor Gemma Handy has paid tribute to late regional broadcaster Ken Richards. Handy said in a statement:

Devastated to hear the news today that one of my former colleagues has left this world.

Ken embodied everything a journalist should be – a man of incredible integrity, principled, bold, dedicated to his work and a consummate professional.

I had known him for around 16 years, dating back to the days of BBC Caribbean when I was freelancing for the service from Turks and Caicos.

Later we worked together at the old Antigua Observer in 2012 and 2013.

He was incredibly supportive of me – in ways I will never, ever forget, including taking a monumental stand on my behalf 10 years ago despite the cost to him at the time.

He was exceptionally generous too, opening his home to me when I was covering Tropical Storm Erika in Dominica for the BBC in 2015.

I had always hoped we’d end up working together again.

I guess it wasn’t to be.

But his legacy will live on as one of the finest broadcasters the region has produced and I have no doubt he will continue to inspire those yet to come.
