Gaston Browne was returned unopposed as leader of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party on Sunday, using his address at the party’s convention to frame the next general election as a decisive choice about the country’s future.

Speaking at the party’s headquarters, known as The People’s Place, Browne told supporters that “the choice before this nation is clear… between certainty and confusion, between progress and paralysis, between tested leadership and the untested ambition of the ignorant.”

He urged voters not to “risk putting the governance of this country into incompetent hands,” warning that the election would determine whether Antigua and Barbuda continues on its current path or reverses course.

Browne, who now heads into the election season at the helm of the ruling party, said the contest would be “primarily about the future of the country,” adding that “this is not the time for unnecessary risk-taking… to experiment with failed and incompetent leadership.”

The ABLP leader also took aim at his political opponents, accusing them of being unprepared to govern and motivated by self-interest. “They are not ready… they are looking for personal opportunities to enrich themselves,” he said.

At the same time, Browne pointed to what he described as a transition within his own party, highlighting younger members being prepared for leadership roles. “We have competent leaders, young, bright leaders… to ensure future leadership,” he said, adding that training was already underway to ensure continuity.

He outlined a broader vision for the country, describing Antigua and Barbuda as being transformed into a “lifestyle superpower,” with policies aimed at wealth creation and expanding access to opportunities.

Among the achievements cited were tax concessions for homeowners and businesses, investments in education, and the expansion of tertiary opportunities, including plans for a law degree programme at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus.

Browne also stressed the importance of national security to economic growth, telling supporters that “you cannot grow an economy in an unsafe environment,” while describing the country as “one of the safest places in the world.”

In closing, he called on party members to actively defend the government’s record in the campaign ahead. “You are ambassadors… you must defend the track record of this great institution,” he said, urging supporters to “carry the message of hope… good performance and good governance.”

  1. Look who is talking about enrichment. Poor people in Antigua is under a spell to remain beggars

  2. Well I told the ALP politicians to enrich themselves and many a them went straight into embezzlement of public funds and they are afraid I will talk so they allow me and my wife and son to take what we need, a reciprocal trade off, now they need to work with me to continue our thieving of public money and lands.

  3. HE’S THE BEST HE’S THE BEST HE’S THE BEST FOR CITY WEST!! WE REDDY WORLD BOSS

  4. That is expected. In Sudan, Afghanistan, North Korea , China and anywhere else there is authoritarianism, the results are the same as in Antigua and Barbuda. It’s not a surprise that they are hoping to win all 17 seats and if that should happen, then that will be the last of any general elections, or so they think. We can now clearly understand why Asot is not amongst them and the fact that Chet is willing to pretend to be satisfied tells us that he must be as dirty as a Sewer Rodent. We have really entered the zone and our relationship with the United can only get worse.

  5. The message he gave here was strategically smart. It is highly risky to change leadership at this stage (unless you are substantially sure the new leader is highly competent).

UPP have not in any substantial way or frankly, based on my analysis, showed that the leadership is competent. I commented about this before and I have not seen them work on that in any strategic way.

Sadly, I do believe that MP Pringle have marketed himself enough to win his seat but not enough to the nation to be accepted as the Prime Minister.

I do have my prediction based on social and behavioral sciences and you may contact me to get my accurate prediction (remember I have always been 100% accurate on this).

  6. People with any common sense should realize that the ABLP is the only choice in the next election. Sadly the UPP is not ready. On the other hand I urge the PM to take corruption seriously. The Antigua Airways and the vehicle sales to Government scandals are just two that have never been investigated independently and is a stain on the ABLP.

  7. @ My 2 Sense
Really sorry to inform you. The only 2 senses you seem to have is dumb and blind. You should be in an institution
