Gaston Browne Administration Buckles Under Pressure But Fails to Offer Adequate Relief

23

PRESS RELEASE: Even in the waning days of his administration, Gaston Browne has presented crumbs to Antiguans and Barbudans, in a desperate attempt to address urgent calls for economic relief.

In a press conference called last Tuesday to highlight the failures of the Gaston Browne-led Labour Party administration, UPP Political Leader, Harold Lovell, offered 6 Simple Solutions for Immediate Relief.

Amid mounting public pressure, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has addressed these demands with his own counterproposal.

However, Lovell describes the recent offers by the Browne-led administration as “adding insult to injury.” He noted that only one dollar was removed from the price of gas and the price of goods on the supermarket shelves has not been addressed.

“These measures provide little comfort, as many Antiguans and Barbudans struggle to feed their families,” Lovell said.

The political leader questions the ABLP’s priorities in addressing the needs of the people, despite record levels of borrowing and revenue collection that should have put the government in a good financial position.

He believes that the Gaston Browne administration has fallen woefully short in their attempts to counter the UPP’s calls for relief, especially since only 3 of the 6 UPP proposals have been addressed. These are:

– Lowering the cost of fuel and diesel by just over $1, as opposed to $3.04 for gas and $4.59 for diesel;

– Allocating 200,000USD to pay National Solid Waste Managements truckers as opposed to 50% owed to all vendors and small contractors;

– Reaffirming that civil servants will receive only one month’s salary in lieu of back payments owed since 2018.

“This is a weak and desperate ABLP maneuver that ignores the real depth of the crisis that many face.

It is merely an attempt to appease voters as we go to the polls. The ABLP continues to turn a blind eye to stagnated wages and economic hardships that our people face, “ Lovell said.

A call for outstanding severance payments to LIAT and CAS workers was ignored.

He was also especially critical about the ABLP’s failure to lower customs duties on essential food items and to extend ABST Relief weekends.

“What about the rising cost of living? I want to see our people retain more of their income, because I believe that it is the Antiguan and Barbudan people who will help drive the economy and get us back on the road to economic recovery, “ Lovell said.

    • I read in the newspapers about Jonathan Joseph. Jonathan Joseph should be charged and disqualified from running as a POLITICAL Candidate in Antigua / Barbuda.

Serpent will be exposed shortly. What is wrong with UPP Candidates ? The whole team should be DISQUALIFIED.

  5. What an amazing leader we have in Gaston “Out of Ideas” Browne.

Look how he’s desperately trying to snatch an election win from the Jaws of defeat, with a raft of monetary bribes, deflectionary “dead cat” narratives and a flourishing magic money tree.

Gassy’s tactics are so hilarious to the educated and critical thinkers.

However, to his acolytes, they firmly believe by throwing money at every and anything before calling the next General Election is the correct manoeuvre to hoodwink the nieve. Utter balderdash!

    • @ BRIXTONIAN

      • Is that what YOU really want for Antigua and Barbuda? You people are downright wicked, ruthless dishonest and demonic. You must be a hybrid of a ? and a ?

  6. Fool who?
We are much safer with Labour.
*Remember the promise of removing the fuel variasion from the APUA bills
*What about the $500 for every Secondary School Student and $350 for every Primary School Student.
Also cast your mind back to the Elderly Housing Repair Grant of $2500 for the elderly? None of those promises ever materialize….. fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
Upp just try to fool people all the time.

    • @ Iman

I agree with you that NONE OF THE LABOUR PARTY PROMISES EVER MATERIALISE, like 500 houses in 500 days, water flowing within 14 days when up to now nearly 5 years after people CANNOT GET WATER AND BATHE, what about ABST off funerals, because UPP suggested it then he TEAR-GAS GASTON GO AND PROMISE IT AND NEVER DID IT.
GASTON WILL NEVER GET ANOTHER CHANCE TO FOOL US 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  7. The writer of this article is obviously not familiar with running business. It speaks to the lack of numeracy and decision making skills.
The country’s affairs still have to be run with some degree of financial regulation and support.
Making noise does not equate to good governance.
God bless Antigua and Barbuda 🇦🇬

    • You’ve said it right because all we are faced with is a tank of noise. You are so confused; you seem not to even know your generic.

  8. UPP candidates have no vision & they don’t understand economics.
UPP does NOT have a slate. Their last slate was seen in 2004
Lovell is the main cause of the precarious position of the UPP

  9. I am at a loss to understand how these Candidates allow Harold Lovell to lead Them into an election. Harold Lovell is a ” SPENT FORCE “

    • @ PETE

Harold Lovell is a “SPENT FORCE’’, but not as bad as the TEAR GAS FORCE THAT CUTIE AND GASTON AND THE ABLP PUT ON ANTIGUA PEOPLE ON 08/08/2021 WHEN MOTHERS AND BABIES HAD TO RUN FROM BULLETS AND THE FUMES AND BURNING INTO PEOPLES HOUSES TO GET AWAY FROM THE AWFUL THING THAT GASTON AND HIS POLICE FORCE DID TO US. THATS Y ME NAR SARRY FOR THEM POLICE.
GASTON WICKED LIKE HELL……A HE A DE WICKED FORCE…NOT LONG NOW BEFORE HE’S GONE.
      GET RID A DEM

  10. @ Sad But True

YOU ARE SO SAD AND SO UNTRUE, lol

ABLP HAVE SO MUCH VISION, so much so that all they do is COG COG COG EVERY SINGLE IDEA OF THE UPP!!!!
That’s what you call critical thinkers and innovators, not the DUNCE, FAT ELEMENTS IN THE ABLP LIKE CUTIE, SAMANTHA, LENNOX ET AL. They cannot even run nor walk to save their lives, lol

  11. i read in the newspapers about Jonathan Joseph. Jonathan Joseph should be charged and disqualified from running as a POLITICAL Candidate in Antigua / Barbuda.

Serpent will be exposed shortly. What is wrong with UPP Candidates ? The whole team should be DISQUALIFIED.

  12. The country is still at the state it was in 2014 and the clowns running around talking about next level.

The only next next level they plan to move too, is to enrich themselves even more and huff more of Antigua lands by them and their cronies.

The lack of adequate running water, bad roads, land grab, late payments to pensioners and civil servants, more debt, nonpayment of debt and all the other nefarious activities will continue unabated, if the people return this cabal to office.

    • Next level of corruption they mean. Up to now we can’t get water. He had to call the election sooner than later. They taking monies from statutory boards even CMC have to be helping them.

  13. The PM is in the loop; he’s aware of the economic catastrophe that is coming in 2023. He’s trying to secure his seat and ABLPs place before SHTF –because people are going to be hungry and angry.

Did the ABLP finished spending all that money the PM said they had and may need to use the 3months grace period in order to spend it all — Or did the FTX collapse/bankruptcy put a spoke in that $$ wheel?
