French authorities have detained a pleasure craft from Antigua carrying more than 150kg of seafood.
According to reports in the French press, a patrol boat from the National Parks intercepted the vessel off the coast of Vieux Habitants in Guadeloupe, on Tuesday morning.
On board was 40kg of Queen Conch meat and 110kg of lobster which according to reports were evidently smuggled.
The French media says two Dominicans were arrested and the boat could be seized.
The report did not give the identity of the sailors nor the owner of vessel. It is also unclear where the huge haul of sea food originated.
But the practice of illegal fishing in the country’s waters is an age-old one which is yet to end. French fishermen have been netted as the main perpetrators.
Experts have long warned that the future of the Caribbean’s conch and lobster fisheries remain under threat due to illegal fishing.
In April, five french men were detained for fishing illegally in Antigua and Barbuda waters.
