Fourth Earthquake Recorded Near Antigua and Barbuda

A fourth earthquake has been recorded near Antigua and Barbuda, according to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI, SRC). The latest tremor occurred on November 16, 2024, at 12:26 AM local time (04:26 UTC), registering a magnitude of 3.8 at a depth of 17 kilometers.

The epicenter was located at latitude 17.63N and longitude 61.63W, approximately 62 kilometers northeast of Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, 113 kilometers northeast of Brades, Montserrat, and 128 kilometers east-northeast of Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis.

This earthquake follows three earlier seismic events in the same region on November 15, with magnitudes of 5.0, 4.0, and 3.7. The sequence of shallow quakes has been felt by residents across Antigua and Barbuda and neighboring islands, though no significant damage has been reported.

UWI, SRC reiterated that these preliminary findings were generated using computer algorithms and are subject to further analysis. Residents are encouraged to report any effects or damage to the Seismic Research Centre to aid in evaluating the impact of these events.

Authorities have reminded the public to remain prepared and vigilant, as the region continues to experience seismic activity.
