Fossil Fuel Giants Under Fire: PM Browne Advocates for Climate Levy on Major Polluters
Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda has called for a global levy on fossil fuel companies during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, insisting that major polluters must pay for the environmental damage they have caused.
“We need a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty,” Browne urged, highlighting the need to halt the reckless extraction of fossil fuels and begin a graduated transition to sustainable energy sources.
He argued that fossil fuel companies, while generating vast profits, are the “architects of our demise.” Browne proposed that these companies be required to pay a global levy, which would fund mitigation efforts and compensation for the damage inflicted on vulnerable nations like Antigua and Barbuda.
“This is not punishment—it’s climate justice,” he declared. “The time for action is now.”
Browne’s push for climate justice resonated with many in the Assembly, reinforcing the need for immediate global reforms in the face of the ongoing climate crisis.
