Former Prime Minister Receives Lifetime Achievement Award for Decades of Public Service and Advocacy

The two-day celebration of the “Sunshine Legacy” of the UPP administration began on Saturday March 23rd with a Community Social at Pensioner’s Beach.

This idyllic setting boasts some of the best views on the western coast of the island, and was the perfect setting to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the election of one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most revered Prime Ministers.

Guest arrivals began at sunset and many explored the indoor-outdoor venue, enjoying cocktails, local cuisine and music, and electrifying performances from the Halcyon Steel Orchestra, Queen Ivena and the Kaution Band.

Born and raised in the St. John’s Rural West Constituency, Dr. Winston Baldwin Spencer served as the first Political Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP) for 25 years.

He was first elected Member of Parliament for St. John’s Rural West in March 1989 and served for six terms, two of which he also served as Prime Minister.

Hon. Richard Lewis, the current MP of St. John’s Rural West, presented Dr. Spencer with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding service to the community and the nation.

A protege of the former Prime Minister, MP Lewis praised Spencer’s deep love for, and commitment to the people of  St. John’s Rural West and Antigua and Barbuda.

“Mr. Spencer has fostered a spirit of unity, progress, and resilience, that steered Antigua and Barbuda towards a future bright with promise and prosperity.

He has left a legacy of ‘people-centered’ initiatives, many of which remain intact today.

His leadership was characterized by exceptional qualities that advanced the socio-economic development of the people,” MP Lewis said.

In accepting the award, Spencer expressed pride in his Party’s accomplishments and philosophy of putting people first.

“I am honored to have made an impact in improving the lives of residents and citizens of Antigua and Barbuda. We introduced a wide range of initiatives that brought relief to the people, including the Millennium Act that helped to regularize the status of many non-nationals,” Spencer said.

He urged the audience to “reflect, reconnect and re-energize to redeem Antigua and Barbuda once again.”

Former Political Leader of the UPP, Mr. Harold Lovell, described Dr. Spencer as Antigua and Barbuda’s best Prime Minister, and praised him for restoring the country’s reputation on the international stage, after years of scandals and mismanagement.

Chairman of the UPP Branch of the St. John’s Rural West Constituency, Mr. Chevaughn Benjamin, read congratulatory messages from several regional leaders and influencers, including former Prime Minister of Jamaica, Hon. P.J. Patterson.

On Sunday March 24, Mr. Spencer was honored during the morning worship service at the Green Bay Moravian Church.

He was well received and congratulated by constituents, and was presented with a gift basket of locally crafted products by members of the Constituency Branch.

  1. Doctor Winston Baldwin Spencer is one of the most decent human beings that has ever graced this earth. He is one of our leaders and it is a beautiful thing that he has been honoured before he departs this planet. He is a living example of how our leaders must conduct themselves as representatives of our peoples. Thank you sir for being an example to us.🙏🇦🇬

  2. Well done and congratulations 🎊 your Honourable Baldwin Spencer.

You planted the seed for the future of the UPP, and an alternative and viable opposition party with your hard work in Making Antiguans Proud (MAP) again.

Without your input, Antigua would have become a one party dictatorship under the ABLP and Gaston Browne. Phew!!!

YOU ARE A TRUE PATRIOT …

    • @ .
Then shouldn’t Baldwin use the occasion to say he endorse him? What left for him to come out and say dat? Oh, ah forgat me forgat. He wife nuh wah nuh Jamaica woman fuh first lady.
      Wat a ting!

  3. The IHI Cold Case files from the Lindquist Enquiry must be dusted off , reopened and charges filed against those responsible.
The WPP – Wadadli Power Plant was one of the biggest rip offs to the Nation. ABLP and UPP must have agreed to a deal, to let these two mega rip offs of the Nation go unpunished, sungoo and lungoo style.

The Nation have being rip off by both the UPP & ALP(ABLP).

    • @ Sungoo…I didn’t want to go there..but you are so right…and people are afraid to call spade a Spade…how can we as a nation just ignore such gross rip-offs and corruption….why are we so divided with the truth and the lies…IHI…the wadadli power plant…the 25 years can’t done car park…Guns to Colombia…the Robert Vecso saga…the mysterious death of John Ashe…and we fighting over politicians and political parties…who are cut from the same cloth…
And we ask the “church” to get involved with prayers and lifetime awards…of those we know pellucidly cover up and condone wrongs against the nation and every five years pretend they want better for Antigua and Barbuda.!

    • How convenient and inconsiderate of you @ SUNGOO not to mention the wasteful 40-odd years under the tutelage of Birdism and Browneism; and then for you to equate the 12-13 years of UPP governance is frankly quite daft!

ABLP supporters NEVER hold this government to account for anything.

Can you imagine the furore if the UPP were in governance for 40-odd years, and the infrastructures and housing are as it is currently. Wow!

ABLP would be spitting ‘Egret’ feathers!

  4. It would be interesting to get a wider perspective from the community at large…and not from the inner circle of the UPP. I knew for a fact that Grays Green and Five Islands community was proud and elated to have a Son of the area elevated to office of Prime Minister….but are truly happy of the legacy he left behind.
If we are truly honest…what would we say? What would Empire…the great football team to ever grace Antigua…say about our esteem leader…what would Halcyon say….how do the youths in the area feel… if the physical landscape of Grays Green could speak…what would it say!
If Dr. Baldwin Spencer is truly honest within his heart as he drive thru the community what would he say to himself would be please with his “Legacies”….how would he feel after “the great rescue” of Antigua and Barbuda from what deemed the most corrupt government in the world….to just handed it back after a measly two terms…nearly one term….
Can we be politically honest and unified for once …and ask ourselves why did the UPP decided they can’t shoulder the burden of our beloved country any more and without a fight just give back to those who feel they are rightful and only rulers of our land. TELL ME WHY ?

    • @ Dexter Pelle
Did the UPP give the country to ALP or the people in the majority voted for labour. Blame the people who are too stupid to know what is good for them. UPP build a new airport, a new treasury building, completed the hospital that was sitting incomplete for years, built ADOM building all in ten years. What has the labour government built? The whole country is failing apart. All the government buildings are a health hazard because of no maintenance resulting in mold infestation. The people who live in Antigua are to be blamed for returning ALP to power and not the UPP.
