Former Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC), Dame Janice Pereira, has been appointed to His Majesty’s Privy Council.

The appointment, approved by King Charles III, acknowledges her service and marks another historic milestone in her career.

In the announcement made Wednesday, the King also approved the appointment of First Minister of Wales, Baroness Eluned Morgan, and First Minister of Scotland, John Swinney, to His Majesty’s Privy Council.

Dame Pereira, who hails from Virgin Gorda in this British Overseas territory, has long been a trailblazer in the legal field.

She made history as the first female Chief Justice of the ECSC, a role she has held since 2012. Throughout her tenure, she has been instrumental in modernising the court system, particularly through implementing digital justice platforms. These innovations have ensured the continued accessibility and efficiency of the judicial system, even in the face of challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Privy Council, one of the oldest judicial institutions in the United Kingdom, serves as the final court of appeal for many Commonwealth countries, including those in the Eastern Caribbean.

Membership in the Privy Council is a highly esteemed position reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service in public life. As a member, Dame Janice will provide legal advice to the Sovereign and contribute to decisions on matters of importance across the Commonwealth.

Dame Janice’s career is marked by numerous accolades. She was awarded the title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of her services to the judiciary. Additionally, she also received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of the West Indies.

  1. Cool. Caribbean people are being placed in high positions all over the English-speaking world. This should hopefully show the young people that we are as capable as anyone else out there. No need for silly crimes and violence. Just choose a path and work consistently towards your goals and you never know where you might end up in life.

  2. Congrats to our Dame Janice Pereira on this new journey. Your accomplishment will serve as an emulation for young women, especially the ones who are legally inspired.
Women making waves in our jurisdiction.

  3. This once again shows that our Caribbean Judges are as good or even better then the Caucasian judges we like to look up to. Which was clearly demonstrated when we held the referendum whether to go with the CCJ or stay with the Privy Council. Some of us really have a low self-esteem and think our color and our people cannot reach to higher heights. This proves them so wrong again. I want to congratulate the learned lady and wish her Gods Blessings.

  4. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

  6. Congratulations,Dame Janice Pereira. For you are a stalwart of a woman. You stood at the opening session of the Court in Antigua a few years ago.You did say, that some Politicians did try to influence the decisions of the Court. In my opinion,it did take a person of integrity to make an open and broad statement like that.I do believed you would be doing very well on that Privy Council as a whole.Good Luck!!
