Senator Mary Claire Hurst, who serves as the Port Chairman, extended condolences to the families of two port workers who tragically lost their lives recently.

The victims were identified as Denroy ‘Waka’ Harrigan and Leandro Payano.

Senator Hurst also mentioned Mr. Javier Alcantara, who is currently in the thoughts and prayers of the port community.

Senator Hurst spoke about the unfortunate incidents that occurred at the port, emphasizing the need for improved health and safety measures.

She acknowledged the dangers inherent in port operations, recounting incidents where workers suffered severe injuries, and in some cases, lost their lives due to accidents.

To address these concerns, Senator Hurst revealed that the port has taken decisive steps to prioritize health and safety.

A notable initiative includes the employment of a compliance health and safety manager. This newly appointed officer is tasked with ensuring that all health and safety rules and practices are strictly followed by all port operations.

The Port Chairman highlighted the challenges faced in enforcing these safety measures, particularly in a small society where individuals may attempt to bypass regulations. Senator Hurst expressed frustration with those who, due to personal connections, seek special treatment and disregard safety protocols.

She warned that the port is a dangerous environment, and non-compliance with rules could result in serious injuries or fatalities.

Referring to a specific incident where a truck backed up on a worker, Senator Hurst emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines. She described how a lack of compliance can lead to avoidable accidents, stressing the need for a change in attitude towards safety protocols.

Senator Hurst made it clear that the port administration is taking these matters seriously. She warned that “Heads Will Roll” if health and safety protocols are not followed, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the determination to prevent further tragedies.

The port community awaits further developments as the new health and safety manager takes charge and implements measures to prevent future accidents.

  1. I knew Mary Claire Hurst in Villa Area back the 70’s.Back then she was a little girl going to school. That picture above does not do her any justice at all.I really cannot believe that is Mary Claire.

    • As you can see this woman is way pass her prime. Why does the government keep her. She should go home and rest herself and give a younger person a job. Both she and her brother. The Labour Party government only looks after their own.

  2. Hi she is in her early sixties, we all will get there if we live that long. It’s sad that a fellow human is going down that road.
Now madam-Is the port still renting the two tugboats and crew and paying that exorbitant price. Who is getting that kickback?

  3. Why are so reactive rather being proactive…. It beats the hell out of me to see things put in place after the fact…… Our security & health system are primary areas that suffer such epidemic

  4. Did Mary Claire graduate PMS in the 70s? I believe I remember her graduating PMS around 1976 or so. Am I right?

  5. The port is a disappointment, if the upp was in charge, just like how they built the airport with docking bridge to deplane they would a put shore cranes to remove cargo from ships, rather than this one rich Arab family providing that crane that is a disaster to happen , and we are been fool that we have number one port, a cargo port and cruise port in one which is a disaster to happen, we have one collision between a cargo and cruise ship. If one was to sink it would block our port permanently. Look at Guadeloupe and other port shore cranes where the container is removed from ship and land right on vehicle to be parked safely. Upp government would a spend all the monies on infrastructure for the people benifit, because these Chinese were given our land free for there personal dwelling after inferior infrastructure accepted by this gang of dealers not leaders.
