The Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) quoted a reliable source stating that heads of government have opted to engage in further discussions on the matter before their upcoming meeting in Grenada.

These discussions aim to finalize pending arrangements related to the revised Treaty of Chaguaramas.

Currently, Caricom nationals enjoy a six-month travel window within the community and require a work permit unless falling under specific categories of skilled workers.

Skilled professionals like media workers, university graduates, musicians, nurses, teachers, and athletes can freely traverse the community with a Caricom Skills Certificate.

Antigua and Barbuda have expressed their desire for an exemption from the full free movement regime, preferring to concentrate on facilitating skilled workers to address specific labor force needs. The government cites this approach as pragmatic, particularly until the economy stabilizes further to fully embrace free movement.

Similarly, The Bahamas and Bermuda have also signaled their intention not to participate in the regional free movement initiative.

  1. I knew this was just all talks I told that to my husband who is half Jamaican that this wasn’t going to be put in place an he said the same thing they jus like to talk an run there mouth knowing they wasn’t gonna do jack squad,I have had Jamaicans work at my place an I love how they work while an Antiguan will tske 20 days to get a work done a Jamaican get it done in one day because they dnt idle

    • I can second that. When an Antiguan will take off sick for days a Jamaicans will work even through sickness but we tend to discredit their character for what a few like on social media. That only make us see internationally racist. The government should let all who is on the island between a year and and 6months now give a temporary status. Stop been badmined and take a page from their book.

      • @Feduptiguan
What you are saying here is not unique to Antigua. When undocumented people go to countries like the US, Canada and other countries, they work for low wages and do the jobs the natives won’t do. The employers exploit them and pay them no benefits. They can’t take sick time because they don’t want to lose the job. The non nationals are in Antigua mostly to make money to send back home. They care little about being exploited by the employers as making money is their primary concern.
Some Antiguans have an attitude and can be difficult to deal with, but sometimes they just need to be shown respect and paid a decent wage.

  2. I agree with the government. We can’t allow all these caricom natives to flock into our small island. They will eventually exploit our work force. Also too many Jamaican especially and other criminals will arrive with a clean police record in other words corrupt Jamaica etc. in Jamaica money make a criminal records look clean.

    • I wholeheartedly agree @ James. ALP committed Antigua to CSME and thereafter Antigua has experienced criminal activities on a monumental scale that was foreign to Antigua.
Jamacians has renowned reputation for being lawless. Over the years the UK and other international countries have put system in place to prevent Jamacians entry into their country.

Jamacia is a commonwealth country, and the UK heads the commonwealth and Jamacians cannot enter the UK to visit, not to mention to work without a visa.
Also, they cannot over stay in the UK without being tracked down by immigration officials. Antigua immigration services is broken and would do well to take lessons from the UK and introduced visa requirements to Jamacians, Guyanese and get strict the Latinos and the Chinese.

The UK and other European countries have started to demand that Antiguan travelling to the UK and other European countries to obtain a visa before travelling.

It’s high time that ALP stops offering amnesty to overstayers, giving our passports to JA, GT and others because it will have dire consequences on our people. Our borders needs to be protected for the good of our nation.
Today, most Antiguans have forgotten what it means to be an Antiguan.
