Antigua Accelerates Road Repairs Amid Traffic Safety Concerns
The government of Antigua and Barbuda has outlined plans to tackle the extensive repairs needed for the country’s 400-mile road network, with nearly half requiring significant upgrades.
Addressing this issue in the Throne Speech, Governor General Sir Rodney Williams acknowledged the challenges of maintaining infrastructure in a rapidly growing economy.
“Fixing more than 100 miles of roadway is a Herculean task,” the Governor General stated, noting that the government has allocated millions of dollars for this effort.
To speed up repairs, additional equipment is being procured, new methods of resurfacing adopted, and more personnel recruited.
Rain, heavy traffic, and aging infrastructure have exacerbated road conditions, while leaks from outdated water mains have further undermined the subsurface. T
he government plans to address these issues by simultaneously upgrading road surfaces and replacing deteriorating cast-iron pipes with flexible polyethylene alternatives to reduce water wastage.
The Throne Speech also highlighted concerns about traffic safety.
With an increasing number of vehicles on the roads, accidents have become more frequent, partly due to drivers exceeding speed limits on newly repaired roadways.
“There is a temptation by drivers to routinely exceed the 20 and 40 m.p.h. speed limits on our roadways,” the Governor General warned, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
As the government accelerates road repairs, residents are being urged to exercise patience and caution during these essential improvements, aimed at creating safer and more efficient transportation networks for the nation.

I notice the Governor General Rodney Williams mout’ ah run more than an APUA water pipe in recent times.
He’s talking about a “Herculean task”. Please stop patronising our intelligence.
Surely it is right to point out to you, that the collective years of Birdism and Browneism (which adds up to over 43 years now), could have seen a fully functioning water supply system across the country in place 2024.
Again, one must question your so-called impartiality.
More than 100 miles of road work 🤣
This is a ridiculous statement. That would means that almost 85 percent of the roads in Antigua are fixed. But that is far from the truth.
I am tired and sick and tired of this government and the lies.
Too many lazy people in this small country.
The roads are in this awful condition because they have been neglected by this ABLP administration ever since they got in office it’s all about lip service with you guys
UPP was in Admin for 10 years. The list of failed projects to numerous to mention here. I would leave with one ” The so called Car Park” This Country is improving daily. So please no negative comments.
