Kendra Beazer’s family is seeking the public’s help to raise money to assist the Barbuda Council member, who was arrested in the United States on March 7.
Sonia Beazer created a GoFundMe page on Friday, intending to raise £15,000.
She said the family was appealing to Kendra’s “friends and supporters to help raise funds to assist in his legal defense.”
Kendra recently received a Fulbright Foreign Students Scholarship and traveled to Pennsylvania to study for a master’s degree in Environmental Policy at Lehigh University.
Court papers say the 28-year-old had been “acting erratically” when he allegedly assaulted three police officers and a sergeant who were escorting him to a voluntary mental health evaluation.
On the GoFundMe page, Sonia insisted Kendra was “wrongfully arrested…while suffering a mental-health event.”
She said, “He was charged with assaulting police officers, this despite being assaulted and tased himself.”
The family member said Beazer “was rendered consciousness at the scene and awoke in the hospital.”
“Within 24 hours of his arrest and hospitalization, he was also arraigned and assessed bail of US$500,000.00 – all without the opportunity for him to contact his family,” she added.
Sonia revealed that “Kendra sought medical intervention on two occasion prior to this event but was unable to get the help he desperately needed.”
She said the aim was to “help him get justice and the mental health services he needs at this time.”
“Let’s get him back on track to complete his studies and return to help advance the development of the beautiful island of Barbuda. No donation is too small,” she concluded.
