Excessive Heat Warning in Antigua and Barbuda

0

An Excessive Heat Warning is currently in effect for Antigua and Barbuda from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, continuing until Saturday.

The Heat Index, or “Feels-Like” Temperature, is expected to reach a maximum of approximately 50°C (122°F).

Location: Antigua and Barbuda.

Timing: From 8:00 am to 5:00 pm until Saturday.

Synopsis: The convergence of high temperatures, relatively elevated humidity levels, and light winds will create extremely hazardous conditions.

This poses a significant health risk, especially for sensitive individuals, with the potential for widespread impacts.

An excessive heat warning is issued when the maximum heat index temperature is projected to be 41°C (106°F) or higher for two or more consecutive days, accompanied by winds of 18 km/h (11 mph) or less.

The peak heat index is likely during the early afternoons. Today, air temperatures have already reached 37°C (99°F), with a heat index of 50°C (122°F) in some areas.

Sensitive Groups: While extreme heat can affect everyone, the most vulnerable are the elderly, young children, individuals with chronic health conditions (such as respiratory issues, heart conditions, or psychiatric illnesses), those who work or exercise in hot conditions, homeless individuals, and low-income earners.

Potential Health Implications: Heat-related illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, are of grave concern. Such conditions can lead to severe health problems, and heat stroke, in particular, can be fatal.

Caution: If you or someone you know experiences symptoms of heat illness (such as dizziness, nausea, headache, rapid heartbeat, or extreme thirst), immediately seek refuge in a cool area and consume fluids, with water being the best choice.

Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat illness, presenting symptoms like loss of consciousness, confusion, and high body temperature.

In the case of these symptoms, call 911 immediately. While awaiting help, cool the affected person by moving them to a cool location, applying cold water to their skin or clothing, and using a fan if possible.

Precautions: Everyone is urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, including staying cool and well-hydrated.

Check on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbors. If you take medication or have an underlying health condition, consult your doctor to determine if the heat poses additional risks and follow their advice.
