Ensuring Food Safety Not Just For ICC T20 World Cup But Beyond

As Antigua and Barbuda hosts several ICC T20 World Cup matches, Chief Health Inspector Sharon Martin emphasizes the year-round efforts of her team to ensure food safety.

Martin highlights that food safety involves examining the conditions, processes, and procedures under which foods are prepared, handled, and stored.

“Our inspections are thorough and ongoing,” Martin explains. “If we find any establishment with a malfunctioning refrigeration unit, for example, we will instruct them to stop preparing and selling food immediately. Temperature abuse is critical, and we take necessary actions when we find such issues.”

Another significant concern is the operation of food establishments without a food handler’s license. Martin assures that the process to obtain this license is accessible, with registration ongoing and new applicants applying daily.

“We encourage everyone to come to the Central Board of Health (CBH), get registered, get trained, and obtain your food handler’s card,” Martin urges. “Displaying this card shows that you have been trained by CBH and know what you’re doing.”

With Carnival celebrations approaching, Martin encourages prospective vendors to register and complete the necessary training to ensure public safety during these festive times.
