There is no slowing down for retired school teacher Miriam Samuel, as she approaches her 90th birthday. Having taught at nine schools throughout her career, she embraced entrepreneurship 30 years ago, when she retired from the classroom and opened her own bakery.
But her golden years have not just been about rest, relaxation and reflection; this has also been a time for her to become innovative. Grandma Mirie, a self-described “seniorpreneur,” has become a role model for her family and community. She developed Screw Pine, a small business that offers more than 90 different agri-products. This includes a variety of jams, jellies, wines, teas, soaps, body oils, beverages, farine, breads and more. Her products offer a sense of nostalgia, incorporating many familiar flavors and aromas of Antigua and Barbuda. Most of the ingredients used in Samuel’s product line are grown in her own backyard garden or sourced from friends.
Samuel’s vibrant cottage industry showcases Antiguan and Barbudan products to the world, while creating an opportunity for locals abroad to transport a taste of home. As part of her grand Birthday celebration, the Samuel family is planning an official brand launch to showcase their matriarch’s range of products and share her faith, passion and knowledge throughout the community.
Dubbed “90 Days to 90 Years,” the campaign will begin on February 17th and end on Mother’s Day, May 12th 2024, which is also Miriam’s 90th Birthday. During the 90-day countdown, the Samuel family will engage in a number of community initiatives and product showcases to highlight how this Miriam has successfully turned her passion into profits. Some of events on the calendar of events include:
Feb 17 Random Acts of Kindness Day – The random distribution of Kindness Boxes featuring samples of Miriam’s products.
Feb 21 World Kombucha Day – Tasting and product demo of Mirie’s signature Kombucha drink.
March 8 International Women’s Day – Media Day.
March 20 International Day of Happiness – A special “happiness assembly” at the Charlesworth T. Samuel School that will engage students in a joyful celebration of life.
April 22 Earth Day – Garden Tour of Mirie’s backyard garden. Media Day
May 11th Mirie’s Marketplace. This event will create a vibrant market setting to showcase Mirie’s product line and the launch of her book. It will be open to the public.
There is no slowing down for this mother of 5, grandmother of 10 and great grandmother of 2. Still a teacher at heart, she intends to share her knowledge with others. Through discussions and learning sessions she will share her recipes for life, building a business and demonstrating how some of her signature products are made.

I taught alongside her at OCS, went to school with Clement, Derede , and Megan and she was always light-hearted, but blunt, if she must! I salute her! May God bless her with many more years!
Great Story, regarding this lady.
Its businesses such as these, that our Nation, must be built on.

Stay well and stay safe.
Mrs. Miriam is a creative being. She also plays the pan and has learnt Spanish. She just doesn’t stop. She will be with us for many more years with that upbeat spirit. God bless you, Lady Samuel.
Cheers
Pity she could not impart her virtues on her son . … More in the Motar than in the pestle.
