In 2023, emergency services saw a significant increase, responding promptly to 15,629 calls from January 1 to December 17, marking a 9% rise from the previous year.

Shawn Greenidge, head of EMS, shared these stats in a recent discussion with Observer Media.

Hypertension emergencies led with 1,324 calls, alongside other health crises like abdominal pain (780), respiratory distress (549), chest pain (510), hyperglycemia (487), and motor vehicle accidents (444).

Another 7,786 calls covered fire emergencies, suicide attempts, dehydration, and psychiatric episodes.

Greenidge expressed concern about exploiting ambulance services to bypass hospital queues, alongside a decrease in the number of deceased individuals upon EMS arrival, dropping from 118 in 2022 to 108.
