The Minister responsible for the Electoral Commission, Prime Minister Gaston Browne, shared with the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda a note received from Mr. Paddy James Esq., Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC), that he has just about reached the retirement age as stipulated by law.
The Cabinet thanked Mr. James for his sterling service to ABEC and for the leadership which he brought to the post.
His replacement has been identified by the Cabinet but has not yet been informed.
Acceptance of the post will be announced next week, following Cabinet meeting.

We want to know why the prime minister Gaston Browne is responsible for the electoral commission? The commission should be independent of government, especially the prime minister. If you don’t do what he tells you to do, do you loose your job? As the saying goes, a me put you there so do what I tell you.
You have zero understanding of how the Commission functions. The Prime Minister CANNOT fire anyone from the Electoral Commission. They are probably one of the most independent bodies in Antigua and Barbuda.
Yea, but he can put in people to do his biddings to steal the election. Free and fair elections require the electoral commission not be controlled by the government and certainly not the prime minister.

Why didn’t the government go to parliament like they did with the other commissioner to extend his time? Is it because he refuses to be commanded or it is because he is not trusted to carry out the commands?
