Director of Education Clare Browne has responded to threats of strike action by teachers.

“It is unfortunate that we are here given the numerous engagements of the Ministry of Education with the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers and our tenacious efforts (evident by actions already in progress, but not captured in the communication cited) to rectify the issues raised.

The Ministry must continue to engage the Union and work aggressively with the other necessary governmental departments as we seek to bring swift resolution to the matters.

Another urgent meeting is set for Monday morning with the Executive of the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers.”

  1. It is funny how, when people stand up for their rights, after promises are made but not kept, that said persons are deemed this, that and the other. Case in point. Weren’t there supposed to be 24 hr security at all schools SINCE earlier last year? Was that promise kept?
Secondly, who criminalized certain disciplinary actions in schools? And thirdly, some observations as to where most of these problems originate.
    1. The lack of structured nuclear families in the black communities. As a teacher, I have seen situations where an individual may have children with two or more individuals, attending the same school, and either no active role is played in one child’s life because that parent is not with the ‘other one’. Some father’s I have NEVA seen, until they show up at graduation.
    2. At many of the school events, how many parents turn up to support their kids? And some when they do, especially at sporting events, they display their nogga-yardish behaviour in front of kids, teachers, law enforcement personnel.
    3. When parents disrespect teachers or say derogatory things about teachers in front of their kids and they still expect their children to be taught because ‘ ah dah wah ahweh money ah pay fah!’.
The adults are to be blamed. Look and see which group ( ethnic) is largely involved in all these nonsense and which schools. We better use this Black History Month, to re-examine a chart a way forward, or we will have to be building more prisons and less schools. Parents afraid to discipline their children. Fatherless homes. Poverty. Political discord. Parents living with their parents and NOT the other way around. All of the social programs previously introduced dismantled. This place doesn’t even have public recreational venues for the young people. And we wonder why some cannot relate. We better wake up, government, ministry, parents. We may be fighting a losing battle.

  2. @#Taking a Stand:
You may have struck the nail on its head!
You speak of the destruction of the nuclear family: that is at the root of most of our problemsvor, at least, a significant cintributing factor.
When you have deoraved socialites, posing as progressive thinkers, bringing cases to the courts on behalf of the LGBTQ agenda, this is precisely the kind of tepercussion we should expect. I am so sickened by the blatant attemots to to re-educate our society to accept that a child born with a penis can be a woman.
This, and predominantly this, is what destroys the nuclear family. Wake up, and smell the coffee.

  3. These outstanding issues raised by our teachers are genuine. However it does appear that the Government is making strides towards long lasting improvement. It may be prudent for both sides to continue dialogue until the issues are fully addressed rather than resorting to industrial action.

    • They have discussed on both side many time. It’s what the government means to do and of course lie lie and carry the fool further.

  4. All the monies done, used up in the election campaign. Sown in the wind now reap the the world wind. YOU THINK TRYING TO MATCH MICKEY EASY. BRIBERY NO CHEAP. St Peters help the barabas

  5. They have discussed on both side many times. It’s what the government means to do and of course lie lie and carry the fools further.

  6. You think is now they talking? It’s time to shut up and do what was promised to teachers. We keep getting the same promises EVERY YEAR yet no actions.

  7. The title of this article should read ‘Education official responds to teachers standing up for their rights’. The teachers are not threatening anyone.
