ECAB to Cease Processing American Express Credit Card Payments
The Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank (ECAB) has announced that it will discontinue processing payments for American Express credit cards effective April 30, 2025.
In a notice issued to customers, ECAB advised account holders to make alternative payment arrangements in advance to ensure a smooth transition. The bank also directed affected customers to contact American Express Customer Service for further assistance.
ECAB did not specify the reason for the discontinuation, but the move could impact cardholders who rely on the bank for processing payments.

So just like that, people with Amex outta luck? No warning, no proper explanation?
ECAB always making things harder for customers. What next?
American Express already hard to use in Antigua, now ECAB pulling out too?
So what happens to businesses that rely on Amex transactions? Pure confusion.
Hope they have a proper plan to replace this, cause plenty tourists use Amex.
I bet ECAB still collecting all kinda fees, but can’t maintain proper services. SMH
Think before commenting….Tourist use amex but do they go to ECAB to make payment?
This means if you go to a vendor to pay for goods with an amex card and they have an ECAB Point of sale/card machine the transaction will be declined. CIBC does not have this issue. So migrating your business to CIBC may be a good move for the folks that encounter a lot of Amex cards.
@International Bank
That’s not true.
The bank will still accept payments made WITH Amex cards but will not accept payments FOR Amex cards.
Meaning, if you are an Amex cardholder, you cannot go to ECAB to pay your credit card bill.
But a PoS terminal from ECAB can still process Amex payments.
ANR, you mentioned with the ECAB communication did not say, but did you reach out to the bank for clarity?
You’re too quick to upload.
Once again communications coming out of ECAB lack clarity!
That alone remains a cause for concern. Please, whoever is responsible for ECAB’s corporate communications, do better.
What exactly is the message that you are trying to impart here?
Are you saying that purveyors of goods and/or services, that accept payment for said goods and/or services by way of an Amex credit card, those merchants can no longer bring these transactions to you for settlement (to get payment) from American Express? I know that several years ago, this was a service offered by Scotiabank, and if I’m not mistaken, it was offered by Scotiabank only. Other commercial banks handled settlements for Visa and MasterCard, but ONLY Scotiabank handled American Express.
So ECAB, is this the service that you are ‘doing-away with’?
Or is it that you are saying to those residents who are holders of an American Express card, that wish to make payments to their credit card accounts, will no longer be able to do this process through ECAB? In any form, no sale of bank drafts, no wire transfers?
Do clarify! Because to simply say that ECAB “will discontinue processing payments for American Express credit cards”, is ambiguous, at best, as is evident by the previous comments.
The term “processing”, can mean more than one thing; rather than using ‘bank jargon’ which often confuses ordinary folks, and even some with knowledge of banking, please try to express your messages in ordinary terms geared towards all your clients.
Do better, ECAB! Do better!
You’re not elementary level anymore. It’s been 16 years since the entity was created, following Stanford’s debacle! You did not start over from zero, but was an amalgamation of existing entities.
That’s plenty of time to have gotten your act together! FOCUS ON YOUR CUSTOMERS’ NEEDS INSTEAD OF YOUR BOTTOM LINE! TAKE CARE OF THEM AND YOUR BOTTOM LINE WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF: IT WILL GROW!
Once again this shows the weakness and lack of focus on the part of the banking regularity body ECCB.
EXCB allows the banks and the credit unions to treat customers like shit.
These type of situations are the result; when the organization that should be protecting the banking public focuses on ceremonial functions, rather than world class banking services of its member banks.
ECCB is partially responsible and to be blamed for poor banking services in the OECS.
