Eastern Caribbean Currency to Replace Queen Elizabeth II’s Image

22

The 105th Meeting of the Monetary Council of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) has approved replacing the late Queen Elizabeth II’s image on the Eastern Caribbean currency.

The decision comes after her passing in 2022.

The gathering also approved the use of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) logo on the currency, pending public consultation until December 31, 2023.

During this time, the public will have the opportunity to provide feedback and suggestions.

The final decision on the new image for the Eastern Caribbean currency is expected by February 2024.

This move marks a significant change in the currency’s representation.

  1. Good, but hoping this doesn’t devalue the EC Dollar, as it has been strong and steady for donkey years now.

    • Stability in the value of the Eastern Caribbean dollar is maintained through strong foreign currency backing, as the Bank is bound by its Articles of Agreement to maintain, at all times, the level of pooled official reserves at no less than 60 percent of the value of its demand liabilities. Nothing really to do with with the Queen.

    • So the value of the EC has not been strong for donkey years. It’s on a steady decline.

It’s appearance of being steady is only attributed to it’s value to the USD. ( There has been an agreement that the ec will always be of a value of 2.7169 only to the USD)

As can be seen the value of euro has gone up and the sterling falling in comparison to the USD directly affecting all of the currencies pegged to the USD. That is the xcd.

So to recap. The value with the usd has not changed due to an agreement.

      • You were getting $2.70, or close to that, because the queen’ head was on it; but now, you’ll need more money to pay for good and services. America will devalue the proposed currency.

  2. Should be photos of each of our Premiers Dame Eugenia Charles, VC Bird , John Compton , RL Bradshaw etc

    • I agree with this. That would be monumental.

The only thing is we are still under the monarchy. The Head of our Executive Government is *shiver* … King Charles. So although we celebrate Independence, we are still under the British.

  3. Please stop the foolishness. The King is the head of state and by right his image should be on the money! I’m not going to accept any money without the head of state being on it.

These people supposed to know that there are consequences for every action.

    • Ummmm. Please accept my apology.

It’s not a law that the king has to be on our currency. Stand corrected. A currency is issued by the authorized central bank of the jurisdiction. Eccb is our jurisdiction central bank.

So any currency issued by that back and circulated on the islands of that jurisdiction is deemed legal tender and must be accepted as cash.

So if the central bank decides to put. Nano on the bill. That’s your money.

      • Your apology is accepted.

It is set in precedence that the Head of State be placed on the currency in circulation. This has been done since money was created. Why should we violate this sacred condition now? Is it proper? Should we put a politician, athlete or musician on the money as people thing these are important people. Being popular, strong and a good dancer/singer is a good thing for a primitive society not an advanced one.

Who do you think gives this made up central bank authority?

“Cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face” never ends well.

    • When they remove the Queen and replace her with someone other than King Charles, just give me your money. I will spend it for you.

    • The king is the head of state for independent monarchies but not for republics like Dominica, so in that case what do u suggest?

  4. The value of the EC currency has NOTHING to do with the Queen or how it looks. Please stop this narrative.

  5. Fantastic news!

I’ve been waiting for this development for years, long long long before the queen’s passing.

Other countries have their own citizens on their currency – and so it should be as well.

UK’S currency has there own Britons on their notes and coinage; and my beloved Antigua & Barbuda should do the exact same thing.

Antiguans have plenty of amazing individuals in the past – and present – who could feature on our bank notes and legal tender.

    Here just four to mention:

    1) Zahra Air (Novelist and activist)

    2) Vere Cornwall Bird (Union founder and Prime Minister)

    3) Jamaica Kincaid (Novelist and essayist)

    4) And my personal favourite would be Prince Klaas, who planned an uprising to overturn slavery on the island – TRUE WARRIOR CLASS.

AGAIN, ANOTHER GREAT BRIXTONIAN PREDICTION COMING TO FRUITION. MARVELLOUS!

  6. Take note ECCB
    STOP STOP STOP
DO NOT TAKE TAXPAYERS MONEY AND INVEST IN ANY NEW NOTES.

The ECCB is already loosing money why go on an emotional trip.

Is there anything wrong with the existing currency? If no what problem are you trying to solve.

Would the value of the currency increase as a result of the change? If no what is the real benefit?

Based on certain projection digital currency will be adapted by 2030, so why now?

STOP THIS MADNESS. CANADIAN BANK NOTE GET ENOUGH F3OM US. STOP TURNING OVER OUR WEALTH INTO THE HANDS OF OUR OPPRESSORS.

  7. I have an idea.Just put the picture of the TAP DAWG PAN DEM. That would be the day all Hell would break loose.

  8. This makes no sense at all!! This is just not necessary and is literally an absolute waste of money!! There are lots of viable and much more important social and sustainable projects throughout all of our Caribbean States, where the same money to produce the new notes could be used to improve the lives of those citizens who really need it! This should not be a priority of any kind, the new polymer notes have only been issued in recent years and should remain for many decades more!!! There will never be such an iconic Monarch as Queen Elizabeth II. Instead of changing the note so hastily, at such a huge expense, the note with the Queens head on it could also be viewed to remain in the Caribbean as one of the last regions on Earth that chose to keep the Queens Novel note for the next 50-100 years, tourists may also want to collect these notes as a Souvenir or keepsake, don’t be so quick to throw that opportunity away, as Her Majesty’s reign throughout the Commonwealth was the longest and is simply part of Caribbean History, like it or not it’s a fact and it cannot and should not be erased!! If this type of mindless undertaking can be funded, one has to question how much money is lying around which could be used more effectively to improve the lives of Citizens throughout the Caribbean….

    • This type of rhetoric is the exact reason why the image must be removed. The use of their imagery is so ingrained that you can’t picture life without it. (disgusting)

As stated above by other enlightened readers, the EC dollars gets ZERO value by the late queens image, the value is held by US currency reserves, economic and other financial instruments. There is also no law mandating a head of state be put on the money.

Barbados has transitioned to a republic and no visa requirements were placed on the country and the money is still higher than the EC with no queen face on it.

The era of Elizabeth II has ended. It’s time to move on.

    • Errrm, Barbados 🇧🇧 seems to be doing just fine since relegating the monarchy to the garbage can of history @ AQUA.

The UK 🇬🇧 king will eventually be kicked to the kerb by Antigua & Barbuda when/if Gaston Browne keeps his promise.

      LONG LIVE ANTIGUA & BARBUDA … 🇦🇬🇦🇬🇦🇬
