Dr. Joseph “Joey” John, a prominent surgeon, has successfully negotiated the purchase of the currently closed Cancer Center Eastern Caribbean from the government, a facility on Queen Elizabeth Highway that faced closure last April due to financial challenges.
In an interview, Dr. John expressed satisfaction with the acquisition, stating that necessary approvals have been secured and the deal is being finalized, expecting funds to be transferred within a week.
His immediate plans include reinstating the Radiotherapy Unit to benefit Antigua’s residents, with treatment anticipated to commence next month. The unit, inactive since closure, is under assessment for repair or replacement by Dr. John’s team, targeting operational status by February.
Additionally, Dr. John plans to introduce a patented cancer treatment, withholding details for a later date. Supported by investors, the acquisition aims to provide crucial cancer relief in the Eastern Caribbean.

The most important question now that the Cancer Center is going into private hands is, will it be catering to poor people who cannot afford these treatments? Private investors generally are looking for profits and 90% of Antiguans cannot afford cancer treatment out of their pockets nor can they afford health insurance. Will poor Antiguans be afforded cancer treatment at the Cancer Center if they have no money and no insurance or will it only cater to the monied class? If the latter, then it is better the government keep the Cancer Center because it will not benefit most local cancer patients.
Yet another failure of the media and the opposition party.
I hold the opposition accountable also, for they lazily ignored the issues and don’t bring any substantive discussions, solutions or unknown facts to the public attention. It’s no different than they are doing with LIAT
Within days of Cabinet Notes on being issued on January 11th. where the media was told:
1. “ A local medical practitioner, accompanied by investors, expressed an interest in purchasing the building”
2. Other offers were made to repair the machines that are in the building”
3. The Cabinet agreed to return to the item next week Wednesday (presumably January 17th.) when a firm decision will be made.
Now we are being told Dr. Joey John a Board Certified internist; with no known medical training as a surgeon, already has the deal with an unknown investor(s).
Seems to me while the media is asleep; THE CREATIVE ENRICHMENT GROUP are busy at work with their primary focus on CREATIVITY ENRICHMENT of themselves.
The deal is in the bag.

Sometimes its cheaper travelling to other Caribbean islands and USA than to have a consultation with Joey.

Why can’t we just get a regular cancer hospital to serve our sick patients and Caribbean citizens? Why this government always get in bed with some questionable people with their grandiose promises? These people can’t set up shop in their own country so they find some “third world country” with a gullible greedy leader to run their experiments on the natives.
Who are these so-called investors and what are their professional qualifications? Have we been provided with names? I can predict that when the foreigners have problems, the lawsuits will follow. And the government said they will own 20%.
This government does not care about Antiguans. They only see money. They are selling the cancer clinic to mostly foreign private individuals to provide treatments to rich foreigners. I am sure I heard Gaston say on his radio show on Saturday, that this treatment is not available in the USA because big Pharma won’t allow it.
Any cancer clinic should be incorporated into the hospital to treat Antiguan cancer patients. Joey John runs a private hospital for profit. Why would he care about poor Antiguans who can’t pay him. Antigua cancer patients is still going to die for lack of treatment.
