Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has condemned a US travel advisory to Dominica, urging the North American country to “stop the ignorance.”

Late last week, the US State Department issued a travel advisory to Dominica, telling Americans to reconsider travel to the island “due to health and safety measures and COVID-related conditions.”

“Travelers to Dominica may experience border closures, airport closures, travel prohibitions, stay at home orders, business closures, and other emergency conditions within Dominica due to COVID-19,” the advisory stated.
Speaking on his Anou Palay programme on Sunday, Skerrit described the advisory as “unnecessary.”

“This travel advisory that they are issuing, stop the ignorance,” he said. “If you do not know, call me, call us, we will give you information and so on. But this unnecessary travel advisory is based on nothing really. Dominica is one of the top countries in the management of COVID-19 and we are prepared to share our practices with countries like the United States but this is not necessary.

If you say don’t come to Dominica, then what about your country?”
Skerrit said Dominica has not had a positive case of COVID-19 in months and all those who tested positive for the virus in Dominica in the past have survived, including an 85-year-old man with underlying conditions.
“So let us not be so indifferent to the plight of the developing world and developing countries like Dominica,” he stated. “It is unfortunate that this was done and we are hoping the United States will fix this. We have written to them formally objecting to this information.”

On Sunday, the US surpassed five million positive cases of the virus.
165,628 Americans have died since the pandemic began.
Dominica has had a total of 18 cases of the virus with the two last cases reported on May 27.
No new cases have been officially reported since.
