DNA reveals female candidate

In keeping with her promise to “keep the slate balanced,” the political leader of the National Democratic Alliance (DNA), Joanne Massiah, shocked the crowd last evening when she revealed Grays Green-native, Erica Edwards, as the DNA’s choice for St. John’s Rural South.

“I’ve always been one to shy away from politics, because I never ever want to be compromised,” says Edwards.

“But as I spoke with [Massiah] and I spoke with [Anthony] Stuart and I spoke with a few of the candidates, I recognized that we all share the same party desire… a desire for a new type of leadership in this country.”

This will be Edwards’s first foray into the political arena at the age of 41. Daughter of Veron Edwards, she is a marketing professional and, at present, manager of the Methodist Book Shop in St. John’s. She possesses a wealth of experience in operations, customer relations, sales and marketing having worked across several industries including hospitality, banking, retail and online gaming in Antigua, Costa Rica and Curacao.

The candidate will potentially face off against the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) incumbent, MP Eustace ‘Teco’ Lake, in the next general elections.

“I believe that Teco is a good guy,” says Edwards, “but I think that I bring more in terms of representation for the people.”

“Based on what I’ve heard in speaking with the people in the constituency, he has not been present. He has not been on the ground. And people think that he has been out of touch with their needs.”

“People are not happy with his performance to date, but I believe that I will bring a certain level of humanness and understanding. I am very confident that in 2018 that I will be the Representative.”

Antigua Barbuda True Labour Party chairman, Vere Bird III, also contested in 2014 for MP in the Rural South constituency.

  1. Congrats to you young lady. Happy to see a FEMALE candidate in the mix. When will “True Labour” unveil its candidates?

    • True! The True Labour Party has gone extremely silent while others have come and presented themselves to the public.

I hope they don’t plan to wait til the last minute to try to garner my vote. I may have already made up my mind.
