A National Discipline Policy and code for public schools is expected to be implemented by September 2018.
During debate of the 2018 Budget on Monday, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, the Hon. Michael Browne said the policy is necessary to ensure standardized discipline is meted out across the board.
“It creates a uniformed standard of how principals, teachers will be able to respond when there is a breach in the decorum that should take place in a public school,” he told the House of Representatives.
Currently, principals and to a larger extent ministry of education executives determine how discipline is administered to students who defy school regulations.
Minister Browne says consultations on the National Discipline Policy and Code are ongoing and will be ready for the new school year.
