Mrs. Feona Charles-Richards, Director of the Family and Social Services Division, has expressed deep concern over the rising violent crimes among the nation’s youth, attributing it to unresolved issues identified years ago.
In a recent interview, she explained that early substance use, domestic violence, and the breakdown of the extended family are key factors driving this trend.
Charles-Richards called for a comprehensive approach involving families, legislators, and the community to effectively address these challenges.

Isn’t it her job to address these issues?
For substance abuse, are there enough effective campaigns against that?
Perhaps she should run more and better awareness campaigns to address substance abuse. Maybe have former addicts giving talks to young people to tell them what their life was like to warn them to stay away. Or show some true story movies about how low people can go. Also, it is important to address that it’s ok to need something to lean on in life, just not an addictive substance. Perhaps play a sport, or take up a hobby, join a support group or go to church. The book “Finding the God-Dependent Life” is a really good book on this topic.
For domestic violence, do they do anything to teach the young people the innate differences between men and women? E.g. try reading that book “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.” by John Gray I think. It may not be 100% accurate, but it was very eye opening for me. It is amazing how many disagreements can stem from not understanding how the other gender thinks and communicates and what is most important to them.
The break down of the extended family is more difficult to fix as people migrate for different reasons, but I suppose raising awareness might help people to plan their lives better…
