The leadership of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Creative Industries capitalises on the occasion of the A&BUT Teachers’ Day to,once again, express our profound gratitude to all teachers in Antigua and Barbuda for their commitment to this noble profession.
The Annual Week of Activities of the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers is taking place within a context of national, regional and global uncertainties resulting from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, but its excellent execution is yet another demonstration that amidst the uncertainties, there are possibilities – the contagions of hope that create pathways into a brighter future.
During the course of the current school year, we have taken several opportunitiesto express our gratitude and to commend teachers for the work that they have been doing during these very difficult times but, on this occasion, we wish to reiterate our thankfulness and express our commendations in a very profound way.
We are acutely cognizant that the cadre of teachers who currently make up the teaching service and everyone else who works in the education sector have experienced challenges that no other generation of people in this sector has faced. We are fully aware that teachers have had to adapt to new modalities of pedagogyand strange, new protocols outlined by the Ministry of Education and have done so with absolute magnanimity.
We are deeply conscious that they have demonstrated by their words and actions, online and in the face to face environment that they are willing to extend themselves in extraordinary ways to give the youth of this nation hope for a future with endless possibilities.
For all that each teacher has done, regardless of whether they have been in the education sector for two months or thirty-two plus years, we saythank you. We commend them for their efforts and pray God’s blessings on them as they continue to serve in this unparalleled field.
We cannot conclude this expression of commendation and gratitude without highlighting the immense contribution of the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers to the wellbeing of education in our twin-island state.
Honest reflections on what has transpired in our schools since the Covid-19 virus made its unwelcome arrival to our shores and gushed into the field of education have led us to concede that we owe a debt of gratitude to the Union.
If the leadership of the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers had not stood alongside the Ministry of Education with the singular aim of ensuring that our education system proved to be as agile as any other in any part of the globe, we could not have managed in this critical period as well as we have done. We salute you and we encourage you to continue to prioritize the interests of the youth we serve above all else.
None of us knows for sure what the new school year will be like, but we, in education leadership, know with unwavering certainty that education will flourish. It will flourish because of the many remarkable people who rise up each day with the determination that they will do better than they did before, they will reach higher than they reached before and they will make a profound difference in the world.
Our teachers are those persons and narratives of the future will extol their praises even more than we are doing on this occasion.I urge our teachers not to let any circumstance or individual wither their passion for the growth and development of education in this beautiful nation.
Let commitment continue to be a sure element of certainty in these uncertain times. Once again, we say thank you. May the words of Robert Louis Stevenson, the great nineteenth century writer: “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant” propel our teachers to do their very best each day as we conclude this school year and move into future.
