Dialysis Expansion at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre Aims to Alleviate Waiting Lists and Attract Medical Tourism

The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) is expanding its dialysis services to meet the growing demand from kidney disease patients in Antigua and Barbuda. Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph announced the installation of 11 new dialysis units, which will help reduce waiting times and improve access to care.

This expansion is just the beginning. Plans are underway to convert the former Holberton Hospital buildings into a dedicated dialysis facility, ultimately adding up to 90 units.

The move not only supports the local population but could also turn Antigua and Barbuda into a regional hub for dialysis care, attracting patients from across the Caribbean and beyond.

Minister Joseph highlighted the importance of this development, especially as many Caribbean islands lack access to adequate dialysis services.

He also noted that enhanced dialysis facilities could boost medical tourism, offering treatment to international patients while they visit the island.

  1. Booze and dope paying dividends. Poor choices will always lead to dependency on these types of treatments. Of course there are exceptions whereby some with health issues from birth will require this service but for the most part lifestyle choices have a lot to do with a person needing dialysis.

  2. When those catalyst are campaigning they forget what they said minutes ago. Over two years ago we were told that Old Holberton was about to be renovated for use as the dialysis unit. That was in the run up to the 2023 general elections. Two years later the same old story. Is people’s health being used as political bargaining chip? I guess when we see any work towards the advancement of the dialysis unit at Holberton Hospital we can say that elections is less than three months away. When will Antiguans stop allowing themselves to be sold so cheaply? The politicians have open credit card to charter planes to take them wherever they want to go and seek medical attention. Yet the fools who worship then continue to cry daily about our health care. For what price have they sold their souls???????

  3. Trupse.
    Trupse!
    Trupz!
    All talk and no action!
Is that why antiguans dropping dead at a alarming rate?
Health minister look into that please.
You have to be well off and popular to get better Health care in antigua..
    Shame!!!
    Once again Trupz.

  4. I must commend the Minister of his work trying to get the additional machines which will make it easier for the persons needing this type of need.

However, I believe he should have used this opportunity as well to highlight the plans he have in place to help curb the rising need to dialysis treatment. We want to get to the stage where we can prevent the problem rather than treating it.

I am not a medical doctor but I will share what comes to mind:

    1. More PR in healthy lifestyles aiming to get persons to exercise more and eat healtier food.
    2. Control the medications that come into the country – some of these same medications cause kidney failure. Sensitize the people about the dangers of some the over counter medications as well.
    3. Form alliance with the Ministry of Works to build better walk-ways – let us develop a walking culture – we are getting lazy with drive thru everything. This should be part of the PR.

  5. Why do we have to be political even about our healthcare. Do you think these machines are only used by Labour Party patients. And perhaps you do not have any close relative or friend in need of this treatment. If not give thanks to God and stay quiet. Because Antigua has almost an epidemic and many people die because they cannot be assisted. Kidney failure cannot be revesed and has to do with many factors. Most are bloodpressure and diabetic. And ofcourse our choice of food. And as they say kidney failure is a silence killer. You will only know when it is too late. Now lets go to the politics. How many dialysis machines did the UPP placed in the hospital? ZERO. How many did the ABLP? Keep counting. How many kidney transplant were done in Antigua? Many? and many more will follow as long as there is a donor. Stop you all nonsense and either hush your mouth or give the man his jacket for doing something to help the very needy to extend their life. Kidney failure is a dead sentence.
