  1. Such a milestone! Looking forward to seeing how she uses her doctorate to mentor the next generation of business leaders.

  2. Congratulations, i to have been accepted to this school to do my DBA but soon realized it has been prosecuted by the Office of Consumer Protection of the State of Hawaii for fraudulently claiming to be an accredited institution. Many students complain about the subpar education, and I do hope she was informed of such. Then again, doctorates are nothing to sneeze at! Wish u well.

  3. 4. SKY YOU ARE πŸ’― % FACTUAL. I just did a quick research on the university and it is NOT accredited by any American or Canadian tertiary educational system. They are listed as a “degree mill” school which recently the countries of Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria have refused to recognize as well. They seem to target immigrant people. I’m in no way putting the efforts or credentials of this young lady down, but all you have to do is Google the school and a host of mega information comes up regarding their credentialing and refusing to provide certain information by the USA department of education, etc. I’m wondering if she’s aware of this. These “degree mill” schools are mostly scam artists who target 3rd world nations especially, knowing they have little or no recourse on legal action.

  5. Atlantic International University, Inc. is an unaccredited private for-profit distance learning university based in Honolulu, Hawaii. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees including doctorates. It is widely described as a degree mill.

  6. @sky There had to be a negative nancy
Please be quiet. If you chose not to follow your dream, so be it but stop trying to cast shade on other people’s accomplishmenta.

  7. Congratulations, Dr. Southwell. Hard work always pays off. The attainment of a terminal degree is one of the highest forms of education Keep soaring. πŸ™πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸŽ‰

  8. @sky – correct. Below from Wikipedia:
“Atlantic International University, Inc. (AIU) is an unaccredited private for-profit distance learning university based in Honolulu, Hawaii. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees including doctorates.[2][3][4][5] It is widely described as a degree mill.[6][7][4][8][9][10][11] AIU degrees are unrecognized in Oregon, illegal to use in Texas, and unsatisfactory for fufilling civil service requirements in Michigan as they are considered substandard or fraudulent.”

Always wise to thoroughly check any educational institution’s veracity before spending lots of money obtaining a degree that is not recognized.

  9. All those coming to run their mouths, just know that it’s obvious that some of you are awful people. To get a degree at any university, work has to be put in. The heights of great men reached and kept was not attained by sudden flight….I know plenty of you reached to great heights because of friends/politics and what you do at night , not toiling.
So yes sky (aptly named) ye of great heights, as well as your same post as ‘not accredited’, if the ” chief drs ” can be appointed and they are not suitably qualified – surgeon and pediatrician and internist, the Ministry if HEALTH will big up Dr. Akez too!!! Roll it gal, roll.

  10. How many names does this one lady have, who wrote this article?
    Dr. Akez…PS Akez sounds good
    Congratulations

  11. Look, this article got me jumping for joy. Desrie, my girl, you did it. What hurt many people is that they did not see it coming. More power to you Empress.

For many of the flame-fanners let me introduce you to Desrie, she a no just-come, she bright since she barn. A woman of beauty, body, and brains, and because of her youth many persons fear her mobility in the Civil Service. But, let us not rain on her parade, as whatever that God plans for anyone will become fruitage in due time.

A real humble, and intelligent woman of the soil, and I am more than certain that the Honourable Darryl Mathew must be extremely proud of his Constituent. She hails from Ottos, and a humble mother of five children, and no matter what dirt all you worldwide web searchers have been trying to through on her Degrees they are 100% authentic, so put dat in a are you pipes and smoke um until the fumes dissipate.

It is no surprise that she would have been the target for many, as she is not one to mix and mingle and try rub shoulders everywhere for clout, and neither does she dress up in all her Sunday-bests like a clown in a circus each time she goes to work, as I have known her to be a simple and elegant woman, and neither does she dip in a ebbrey opportunity fu chat and try sound bright fu impress no one, she uses simple words that would carry the weight of an ox when delivered. As the late, great, famous Reggae artist of the beautiful island of Jamaica sang… “Who the cap fits let them wear it.”

So diggers and searchers to find out if the University she attended is accredited or not, it would have been better if you took the time to consider if all accreditation has to be from Canada or the US. And from what I see I am quite certain this young woman did her research quite well, knowing that Antigua is not a US state, so even if the US does not acknowledge accreditation from this University some other country will, so tek dat in a are you nen-nen. The US no accept accreditation from Cuban University and many other Universities worldwide neither, and still plenty a are you and are you pickney an dem still go there to study. So what is you all problem…. Pure jealousy a kill are you.

Des is a past student of the Golden Grove Primary School, the Antigua Girls’ High School, the Antigua State College, Pace University in New York City, where she was also honoured for her hard-work dedication, and leadership as a student and Alumni. So researchers keep digging. Need I forget to mention she has Pre-Law and Technology Systems under her belt, so sip dat with your bush-teas also.

A wha are you fraid that she go outshine some of you all old, simple, and non-achievers, whose certificates have eyes ears, noses and mouths rather than your names on them?

She was always an ‘A’ student haters, winning Poetry Competitions and Essay Writing for Tourism in primary and secondary schools, played Volleyball, was Class monitor year after year, so getting the 4.0 GPAs all round is no surprise to me. She NATURALLY bright.

CONGRATULATIONS DR. DESRIE MARISA SOUTHWELL, jealousy, envy, and bad mind a kill plenty of them, and that is why they cannot accept your MAJOR accomplishments.

To all the well-wishes I join with you, because this young lady deserves nothing but our gratitude for making Antigua and Barbuda, women, mothers, and Civil Servants proud to call her our own. A FAITHFUL NATIONAL indeed, and keep shining.

  12. CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Destie Marisa Southwell …… Esp on Your 4.0 Score For Both Masters and PHD Degrees…….

I am POSITIVE that Your Dissertations for BOTH Programs will Be An Asset to The Functioning of Our Civil Service….. I would give ANYTHING to have an Opportunity to Read Them BOTH ……

Thank you for helping me to Achieve THIS Desire ……

  13. I wish we could be kinder to each other. Dr. Southwell has a dba.
Unlike what happens everyday, Dr. Southwell did not suddenly UNFAIRLY get a promotion or salary hike! She simply shared her pursuit of happiness.
Those concerned about her degree will remember that Cuban medical degrees were once trivialized. So many degreemills exist because people want to gain higher academic standing.
The article is simply congratulating Dr. Southwell for something tangible. Only the HR department needs to debate accreditation. With time, others will pursue AIU degrees and will individually decide whether it’s worth it or not. Certainly, no one can debate the knowledge transfer and the insight gained with lifeling learning. It helps to prevent mental stagnation.
Let’s enjoy this moment. It’s supposed to be a ‘feel good’ news item. We need more community ( human ) – interest pieces. Everyday, it’s controversy, after controversy. Can’t we just celebrate life, celebrate people, celebrate small victories?

  15. Dave Ray
I expect that you would chine in to congratulate her for you to have a piece of paper which amounts to fake credentials.
Why after a history of stellerlacademic achievements has this person choose to be credentialized from a know diploma mill?
She is not alone. We’re one to do a survey of the individuals in Antigu and Barbuda with University degrees.
I would guess 50% are from known for-profit diploma mills starting with Monroe College in NY.
It begs the question: for you who went to Lehman College, and she who went to Pace U. Why follow up with further education at those types of businesses?

  16. What does a Principal Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Health do?
    What does the job entail?

  17. Some people are as illiterate as they come, makes you question who raised them.

Casual Observer, whom I believe have many names in this response newsroom chat, it seems that you have a personal vendetta against persons who seek higher learning, what happen you missed out your opportunity?

Challenge your limited brain capacity rather people’s achievements, and you would be able to sleep better at nights. Mr. Dave Ray and Dr. Desrie Southwell are two of the many Antiguans who have contributed meaningfully to uplift themselves from small-minded thinking, as persons such as yourself have pitiful agendas for your failed life successes, and at the end of the day you secretly reach out to them for assistance.

Monroe College and AIU have been in operation for over 25 years, so these degrees mills seem to be reaping much successes over the years, where is yours. Perhaps the Bible could ease your envious and evil-burning soul. Get a life!
