Department of Culture presents – “Folklore” – The Cultural Character Design Competition

The Department of Culture, with support from Arton Capital and Sechuns The band is launching “Folklore”, a costume design competition geared towards students between the ages of seven (7) to twentyone (21) years old. In an effort to further educate and preserve our cultural mas characters, the Department of Culture sets out to engage the nation’s youth through this design competition.

The contest will challenge the students to create their own one of a kind design based on a traditional cultural character. The competition is divided into two categories; 7-13 and 14-21, with one winner, second (2nd) and third (3rd) place from each category.

For participants in the 7-13 category, they must present a design of the “Carnival Clown” also known as the “Fancy Clown”. For participants in the 14-21 category, they must present a design of the “John Bull”. Participants are encouraged to speak with local designers, cultural leaders and research through online and local sources to further shape their designs.

The 1st place winners will be able to see their costume become a reality and also participate in a costume building experience with established Antiguan costume designers and builders to get first hand experience in costume making from concept to reality.

Cash prizes for each category:
