ST JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda – Education and Sports Minister the Hon. The nicknamed party stand at the ARG, made famous by DJ maestro Chiki, and comedians Gravy and Mayfield, was the place to be for scores of years during the cricketing era of the Antigua Recreation Grounds.

Over the years, the stand has fallen into dis-repair due to age and a decision was made by government to demolish the stand in the interest of public safety.

On Monday, a team from Hanka Construction commenced the removal of material from the stand, with some to be re-used to build seating at the YASCO sporting facility on Old Parham Road.

We are pleased to present photos of the commencement of work at the grounds.

  1. The double decker donated by Bruce Rappaport has served us well for four decades. Time for a new model while repurposing many of the pieces of metal. Long live ARG…🇦🇬

  2. I miss the ARG, and witnessed many amazing sports and events there (the food and vendors will be sorely missed as well, especially the bull foot soup … hmm!).

Hopefully, this iconic and world renowned ground will be rebuilt and restored to its former glory.

  3. I have been very fortunate to watch 2 records being made at the ARG.I watched as Brian Lara made 375 to break Sir Garfield Sobers’ 365.Then I went back and saw Brian Lara made 401 at the same ARG. That place was like a Party for Cricket in Antigua and the Caribbean at large. Long live my fun times at the ANTIGUA RECREATION GROUNDS.Shell Shield Cricket,Leeward Islands Cricket,Test Cricket and Carnival.

  4. I know @ Falcon, I’ve been to the Sir Vivian Richards ground a few times, but it can’t replicate the tremendous atmosphere of the ARG, I was there when they recorded the biggest crowd for a Party Monarch competition. Happy days!

  5. I witnessed Brian Lara break & made 2 records on that famous ground also the numerous reggae artist from Jamaica & farther afield I watched live on stage at that venue.ARG for me a very peculiar place on earth.
