Demands for National Sex Offender Registry as outrage over gang rape of preteen mounts

16

Social media was awash with the testimonies of the survivors of sexual abuse over the weekend. The debate was triggered by the traumatic disclosure by Cabinet of the gang rape of a minor.

More details have emerged however, that have only added to the disturbing nature of the case.

Earlier, it was only disclosed that the child involved is a minor, however, it has now been confirmed that the child was between 11 and 12 years old at the time of the brutal sexual assault by a group of adult men.

The primary school girl is now pregnant as a result of the attack. Even more harrowing are allegations that the child is believed to have been subjected to other incidences of abuse prior to the gang rape.

A number of women took to social media over the weekend to recount their stories of sexual assault as both adults and as childhood assault survivors. Almost all of them had one theme in common; the lingering trauma they have had to live with since the attack and the lack of support for survivors of assault.

Many brave survivors said while they have found a way to continue their lives, the experience left them in constant fear for their safety and that of their families, and issues with trust and developing and nurturing healthy relationships.

Several others who said they reached out for help following their assault expressed that they felt traumatised all over in the disclosure process as they were made to feel they had contributed to their attack or were disbelieved.

More than a few of these women expressed anger, fear and disbelief that many of these attackers were never held responsible for their actions or, having served time for their crime, were allowed to roam free without restrictions that would protect others from sharing the fate of their victims.

While the public debate over what should happen to convicted sexual predators has ranged from death to longer terms of incarceration to as much as life imprisonment, one of the more reasonable suggestions made proposes the establishment of a National Sex Offender Registry.

In other countries where Sex Offender Registries exist, certain information about persons convicted of sexual offences, including their name, photo and place of residence, is entered into a data base accessible by the public.

They are required to appraise authorities of any changes to this information for the safety of the public.

The court may also impose restrictions on where sexual predators can live (they may be prevented from living within a particular distance of schools or other locations children frequent) or the type of employment they are allowed to engage in. Depending on the nature of the sexual offence, the court can also determine the length of time a person is required to remain on the registry.

Last week, Minister of Information, Melford Nicholas, called for an intergovernmental approach to raising public awareness about the country’s child abuse and protection laws and policies and the penalties in place for those who violate them. (POINTE XPRESS)

But not even that want your hole so you bex a rass. Now all you can do is wish you get gang raped and dat nar happen coz not even the gang rapers want your hole.

        • Hey “Undesireable”, you need treatment, professional help. OR will you be one of those on the “REGISTRY”? Just askin’.

  1. The PM and Cabinet should IMMEDIATELY order the establishment of a SEXUAL OFFENDER REGISTRY, listing all convicted offenders, past and present, including any that were convicted at any time for molesting a child, with no exceptions. The general public must have easy access to the registry, just like any other developed country. Once on the list the offender is on it for life. No excuses, please. Pedophiles cannot be cured.

    • “Pedophiles cannot be cured”?? so why was UPP Frontman-CONVICTED PEDOPHILE allowed to be near our schoold children when he and Franz were protesting among them? Do you think Lovell endorses this behaviour? It is one thing to have MAGIC on Curse-ader radio, but to have him mixing with our teens…….

“A social inquiry report painted a NEGATIVE PICTURE of the manner in which Hughes socialises with women.”

      • Dear “Hmmmm”, I said ANY convicted child molester, past or present or future, should be publicly listed FOR LIFE on the Antigua Sex Offender Register. I don’t personally know anything of the case you mention, however ALL offenders need to be listed for life. PEDOPHILES cannot be cure. That is common knowledge. They must not be allowed near any children EVER!!!! Run the wicked idiots “out of town”, and house them in a special camp on Redonda. It’s simple as that. The Freedom Movement should hit the streets with a serious march demanding this be done.

    • @CErmle.., being #reactive on issues such as these, rather than being #proactive can directly be attributed to PPP – Piss Poor Planning and PPM – Piss Poor Management on the part of those charged with management, of the Nation’s affairs!

Now, question for you is it a fact, that the ‘age of consent’ was lowered from 18years to 16years, so as not to embarrass Papa Bird and his shenanigans⁉️ Cutie is still sexy as a coke bottle.

  2. How long me ah talk bout PARADISE VIEW ring ??? Pickney parents allowing their kids to go by business owners in exchange for money. All these girls that go missing for days, ah video dem ah get pay to make ! Just like Dollyhouse. Big business owners and family names that is why Police leff dem lone.

    • Tell them again. Some people act like they dont know whats going on then act like they were past victims. My neighbour was going with a rast guy and the guy was more interested in the daughter. Said he would take care of her and you know the mom push that man on her child just for money. Night time you see the little girl in the man car well brace back as if she a big woman. Am not saying some women arent raped but some werent and those are ones looking for money.

  3. Sex with a minor is rape or plain and simple. So many adult women in Antigua and a group of men needed to rape a minor? They should be castrated. The age of consent it 16. Just wait nuh man. Chups. Furthermore wait til
    They are 18.

  4. Hey “Antigua First”, absolutely these rapists need to be castrated, but the head of their penis also needs to be decapitated. They’ll never rape again.

  5. I find that many Antiguan men love young girls.
Girls that they are 15, 20 years plus older than and they tend to prey these girls from young and end up being with them publicly after they reach the age of consent.

I feel if you can be with a girl that can be your daughter, regardless of the fact that she’s of the age of consent, you’re a molester.

  6. These “men” are actually mentally challeged and totally immature, unable to function in society like REAL men. These old farts (upon conviciton, of course) need to be cut off from normal society. Not to mention being casterated and having the head of their penis decapitated.
