Day care and pre-school providers say online learning not working

16

An early childhood educator is lamenting the challenges associated with online learning for young minds.

Ms Salmon speaking on behalf of day care centers told Antigua News Room that “online does not work for young kids.”

She said the providers are facing hardships like rising rental costs utilities and cost of higher education with no income.

She said the ministry is not taking into account that online learning does not work for very young kids who learn through their 5 senses.

“They need hands on and movement to develop small and large muscles.”

Day care providers want the authorities to stop lumping them with primary school because they are different.

They want the ministry to take another look at its policy for children under 5-years as parents are finding it difficult to find places to leave the children when they go out to work.

  1. Well all I know is that my daughter learned more at homw during pre-school time then when she went to shool just to play. It was Barney and Dora and all the other PBS kids videos that taught her to read early in the beginning. These days you have many online channels that teaches your pre-school child more than when they go to class.

    • If you do the research and listen to the medical professionals discussing the issues of not sending children to school you will discover that children (which includes preschoolers) need to be socially interactive with other children. It is apparently physiologically damaging to isolate them.
Not minimal in this closed schools situation is the VERY high risk of abuse taking place at home. Countries around the world are releasing alarmingly increased statistics of home bound abuse against children and adults which in many cases is attributed to being on “lockdown”.
In my opinion it is very damaging to close schools and children are the least likely to catch or suffer with with the Chinese virus. Forcing children to wear masks all day is not healthy either and it has also been shown that a “normal” lifestyle allows the human immune system to function as it should…Obviously those with compromised immune systems would definitely need to be more careful.
Let’s do what is right for the children, their parents and the teachers. Open the schools and allow life to get back to some sort of normalcy!

    • Educational focus for this age group is social development..sharing…caring….helping…bonding. These aspects are what make us humans. ABC’s and 123’s are only a part of it…not the whole thing. Plus parents need a safe place to leave kids while they work.

  2. This should have been foreseen. Kids that age will not sit confined to watching a laptop or phone screen. Many parents are working. Some who are not may not have the skills to assist the kids with their learning.
    Here’s an idea.
We have a national television station. Create and run programmes during certain times of the day for the little ones. It is easier and more productive to get them to sit down in front of a TV screen than a laptop. Also they probably would have more access to a TV than a laptop or PC.

  3. What about parents who have to work and no one to babysit there children at least not everyday and the work place understand

  4. is it really not working or is it for financial gain that you write this as news? Should parents really put their babies at risk cause “providers are facing hardships like rising rental costs utilities and cost of higher education with no income.” Mr PM please look into some financial assistance for persons who are a part of this unfortunate circumstance.

    • You do not speak truth; you emphasize the wrong points which result in half truths. HALF TRUTHS are LIes!
