Veteran broadcaster Dave Lester Payne has called for the return of former United Progressive Party (UPP) political leader Harold Lovell to run as a candidate in the next general election in the All Saints West Constituency.

Payne’s call has garnered support from Winston “Fled” Henry, an outspoken UPP supporter and former Public Relations Officer.

During a passionate broadcast last week, Payne expressed his disappointment over the recent resignation of Anthony Smith from the UPP to join the ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) administration. He emphasized that Smith’s departure should be seen as a defection rather than a resignation, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Payne revealed his personal investment in Smith’s political journey, sharing his deep disappointment in Smith’s departure.

“I voted for him because I wanted to vote for the UPP. He got up and left, and that was a deep disappointment for me,” he stated. “I could not digest my food or sleep when I heard about his defection. For the sake of the young man and my constituency, I prayed it was wrong.”

The call for Lovell’s return comes at a crucial time for the UPP as the party seeks to regain its footing and prepare for the next general election.

Both Payne and Henry are hopeful that Lovell’s return will inspire confidence and bring about the necessary change for the UPP to succeed.

  1. Lovell is part of the problem as he is totally under the control of the pig with lipstick. In any case he has lost 8 out of 10 attempts to be elected. When a party has to return to the dustbin of time, they are in deep trouble. And Dave, since you are such an ardent UPP supporter, always remember that you are yourself a turn coat, who used to be red, red and red. And what does this say about your leader Pringle and your other MPs. Is this a slap in their faces? And aren’t you also admitting exactly what Anthony Smith, Cleon Athill, Shawn Bird and Fled have said? The UPP is toxic.

  2. No one will doubt that the UPP has lacked proper and decisive leadership since the departure of Harold Lovell. Leader Pringle has tried his very best but he can do so much and no more given his limitations. When you are up against someone of the caliber of Prime Minister Browne, you have to be articulate and knowledgeable with the ability to shape and dictate the party’s vision and plans. Frankly speaking, it’s been sadly lacking.

  3. The UPP exectives deserves what they’re getting for running that SHAM convention. That cheating made the party weaker; and, it exposed some of dirt that has been hidden from the electorate. Now, many of critical thinking supporters are reevaluating their allegiance to the party.
Those wannabe lady governors will have to wait another 4 years before such a possibly presents itself. 😭😭

  4. Swetes have produced some of the most intelligent people in Antigua, according to my grand mother (by. 1910).

    We deserve better!

  5. Laughing my head off. Harold Lovell has beaten up so much by ABLP, now He is a “ SPENT FORCE “. Get rid of The Man Cow ( D.GISEL Isaac), Pringle , Shaku Waku et Al.

  6. The fact that there was a ‘SHAM’ convention, indicates that there still is DEMOCRACY in the UPP. The same cannot be said of the ALP, where the only living dictator in the English-speaking Caribbean reigns. Chet prepped himself to make a challenge at leadership but the tyrant made it clear to all those with similar interests, that there is no need for a convention, and in submissive style, synonymous with states under dictatorship, they passed the message around. We are in for some tumultuous times ahead.

  7. Hon. Gaston Browne, Eric ( The Red) your STRONGEST social media Supporter is back. Let’s stay on track to TOTALLY dismantle UPP. They have IMPLODED I have never seen such an UPSIDE DOWN Opposition party before in Antigua. Jamale Pringle is limited and cannot articulate His vision for the party. Thanks to the MAN COW , JAQUI QUINN , SHAKU WAKU, BRIXTONIAN, ZACKIE and others for Their help in destroying UPP. Next election ABLP 17 SESTS. UPP 00 SEAT.

  8. @AUDLEY PHILLIP

I strongly in support of what you mentioned above. Although Pringle has limitations and having MAJOR problems with ARTICULATIONS, he still holds the only safe seat for the UPP . All other seats for UPP are up for GRABS. Actually I believe UPP will lose all the other seats next election. Therefore UPP will be in Opposition for next 20 years at least if completely not DESTROYED.

  9. @Eric…why the need to try to “dismantle” the UPP? If your party is good for the country then why is it so hard for them to articulate that? That alone should prove to everyone that ABLP is not sincere! It’s like a suitor whose only approach is to destroy all the others so that he can abuse the woman without having to worry that she might leave.
Now, do you think if Gaston is successful in destroying all opposition parties he will stop there? No! The opposition will then come directly from the people so they will have to be destroyed as well. You guys have no idea what you are trying to defend but time will tell.

  10. Political Party has always and will always go through challenges. Joseph and Benjamin had it out live on radio ZDK Asot and Gaston got into a near fight on the campaign trail.

The challenges with the UPP should make the party stronger, if it can manage those differences properly.

If persons can “kill self” as the Bible states and allow for the greater good of the party and the country to be the focus.

Those who believe they need to hold on to power no matter what they are selfish and they must “kill self” and allow for the best of the UPP to rise to the top.

The challenges shall past, and the party will settle down.

For the sake of the nation they should listen to the people and what the people want.

    I have hope they will.

    Antiguan fu real!!!!

  11. @ ERIC (THE RED) quote:

“[Gaston]…Let’s stay on track to TOTALLY dismantle UPP …”

    @ GILES quote:

“Therefore UPP will be in opposition for next 20 years at least if completely DESTROYED.”

As you can witness here, there can be no doubts whatsoever that Gaston Browne and his followers want no part in continuing in ANY democratic process anymore in Antigua, and they just wants to pursue in the annihilation of the UPP and demolish our Sovereignty.

THE PRIME MINISTER MUST NOW COME FORTH AND CONDEMN THESE OUTLANDISH COMMENTS. NOW!

  12. @Rovi, if the convention is going to be a SHAM you might as well not have one — because it WANS’T an HONEST DEMOCRATIC process.
An unjust election is NOTHING to brag about. Dat’s y UPP inna wan shithole now!

Boooooo. TEK DAT inna aru nennen!

  13. Come on @Brixtonian! Gaston Browne condemn statements uttered by the minions? He applauds the fools.
They are deadly afraid of Harold Lovell. If he’s a spent force, washed up and UPP is so dismantled, why do they keep bribing their MPS?
ALP has problems as the DAWG continues to wreak havoc among the dunces. He pays traitors 6 million dollars, gives them senatorship, positions on boards, ministries, while the minions continue to beg and suffer. Even if Balaam’s ass were to speak to these cool-aid drinking ALP supporters, they would all perish like Jim Jones’ followers because their master told them the cyanide is cool-aid.
The quicker we rid the country of this scourge, the better for the future of this country.

  14. I’ve always contended contended, since the 2023 General Elections, that….

1…Harold Lovell should have mounted a much more vigorous effort to, in protesting the results of the St. John’s City East Constituency!
The PM even gave him ammunition(the allegation, of transferring voters from one Constituency to the next).

2…Harold Lovell MUST shed his #stoic_armour, roll up his sea island cotton shirts, and begin to throw some Mike Tyson punches (no biting though). Politics is a #blood_🩸_sport!
Lovell should run in ASW – All Saints West!

3…Baldwin Spencer MUST also, return as, a Candidate and run in St. John’s City West, yes, yes, yeah!

    #BALDWIN_4_CITY WEST!

4…Move Allister Thomas to St. John’s City East.

5…Lennox Weston has being kicked to the curb by ABLP, must consider switching parties and run on the UPP ticket in St. Peters!

6…D. Giselle Issac should be running in St. John’s Rural North!

The Nation MUST have a strong OPPOSITION for better accountability and management of the Public Purse!

  15. I hear you @ Watching, but I’m ever the optimist; and my glass is always half full, not half empty; and I’ll let you in on a secret boss (nah tell nobody 😁), my buoyancy and sanguineness has reaped many rewards overtime.

My favourite Biblical story has always been David and Goliath – sometimes the “overriding” underdog takes down the big DAWG 😉
