Daryll Sylvester Matthew appointed Minister for Education, Sports and the Creative Arts in Antigua and Barbuda

Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, the Hon. Gaston Browne today appointed the Hon. Daryll Sylvester Matthew as Minister for Education, Sports and the Creative Arts.

Minister Daryl Matthew replaces former Minister Michael Browne who was relieved of his duties to afford him time to address a legal matter.

Minister Mathew, the former Minister for Sports, Festivals and the Arts holds a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) specializing in International Business, with research in Foreign Direct Investment from Aston University in the United Kingdom and a Master’s Degree in Geo-Information Management from University of Twente, Enschede in the Netherlands.  He also holds a Diploma in Land Surveying from the University of Technology in Jamaica.

During his university years, Minister Matthew became involved in several activities to include becoming President of the Antigua and Barbuda Students Association in Jamaica, and a member of the Rotaract Club of Kingston, Jamaica. In Antigua and Barbuda, he was a member of the Rotaract Club, and held various portfolios including, Conference Chairman, International Services Director and President. After several years in the Rotaract Club, he was invited to join the Rotary Club of Antigua and was a member of the board for two years.

Sports is a passion for the Hon. Minister, and as a consequence he became an elected member of the Executive of the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association in 2003 and eventually President between 2008-2010, and again in 2013. Additionally, he is a Past-President of the Golden Grove Sports Club, former Treasurer of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation, a former Member of the Finance Committee of FIBA Americas, and a former Executive Member of the National Olympic Committee.

The new Education Minister is also a former Director of MYST Carnival, a former Director of Trinity Academy – a secondary school in Antigua and Barbuda, and a former Director of the Antigua Commercial Bank.

  1. With the MP qualifications, I thought perhaps he would be appointed Minister of Finance instead of Education. Sometimes, we need a change (the more things change the more they remain the same). Yet, who am I to say when many others are oblivious to demand accountability?Hopefully we will have more transparency and accountability with this new appointment ( not holding my breathe).

  2. I somehow feel with Dean Jonas background he would make a much better Minister of Education. But the PM has more information to his benefit. So I would think he knows best.

  3. You are a man of conviction, a brother with principles, a comrade in the Black democratic socialist and labour movements. Yes, this is a heavy load to carry, but a man with your values and spirituality should be well able to fill this important post. Congratulations. The Prime Minister made a very wise choice. Sincere congratulations. Now we can finally get that other crazy bald head out of our time, and get down to business.
