Anthony Smith Jr is facing renewed criticism over his political allegiance, after UPP Chair D Gisele Isaac claimed he began talks with the ABLP shortly after winning his seat—despite his repeated denials.
Over the weekend, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced that Smith will run as the ABLP’s candidate for All Saints West in the next general election.
Smith resigned from the UPP last July, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership. Days later, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy—a role he continues to hold.
His departure came amid growing internal tensions, which were echoed again this weekend by MPs Kelvin Simon, Richard Lewis, and Algernon “Serpant” Watts.

So if the UPP knew that he had started talking to the ABLP after winning his seat on the UPP tocket, why didn’t she say something to the public about this? Candidates switch allegiance all the time and it’s well within the rules. Ethics, strategies, tactics, principles, decency, matter to the people. Didn’t PM Brown say so before and after the elections. When felt threatened after the elections PM told his colleagues don’t bother think anyone of you can try to overthrow because I have Anthony Smith …… On the other hand the UPP will not take any of you so it would be the end of your political careers. D. Gisele Isaac is one on the most intellectual Antiguans. Her command of the English language is superior to most. If she was a man she would have been Antigua PM long time ago and not a role player.
No one on UPP slate can be compared with her. Most people are uncomfortable around people more educated than themselves , especially those that seeking power. So instead of dragging her down, what you should be doing is elevating the lady. Can you imagine, weak boy Anthony Smith debating her. He cannot talk and look anyone in the eye. Gaston intimidated him into submission. Can the serpent debate with her ? She would turn him into a dummy on any topic. Can Suggy not for a second. Richard will do ok but no competition.
On the government side , the only person that can stand toe to toe with her is the PM. That will be a debate I would pay to see .
So I don’t think she is rubbing people wrong. She is strong, confident, imposing in stature, very well spoken , beautiful and despite how she is portrayed she is always smiling. I am no way as educated as her, however this is the type of person if I had a billion dollar business, would easily put in charge. Similarly if I was PM she would be my chief of staff, my right hand. See if you are genuine you would not be afraid of anyone.
