Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph has announced that almost a dozen medical professionals will be sourced from Cuba to augment the workforce at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.

In an interview with Observer AM, Joseph revealed that discussions are ongoing with the Cuban government to provide additional doctors and nurses to address the healthcare services’ disruptions that occurred earlier this week.

The Health Minister has requested six more doctors and five more nurses with expertise in specialized areas.

The negotiations aim to address issues such as better working conditions, overtime pay, and the lack of essential equipment that led to the cancellation of several surgeries.

According to Joseph, significant progress has been made in the discussions, and he anticipates a resolution shortly.

The next round of negotiations is scheduled for Tuesday.

  1. CUBA IS A GODSEND,
BUT I HAVE TO ASK THIS QUESTION BECAUSE I KNOW CUBA IS NOT DOING IT FOR FREE
THE CUBAN NURSES AND DOCTORS HAVE TO BE PAID.
SO MY QUESTION IS WHERE WILL WE GET THE MONEY FROM TO PAY THOSE CUBAN DOCTORS AND NURSES AND WE DON’T HAVE THE MONEY TO SETTLE OUR OWN LOCAL NURSES DISPUTE

    • Maybe he’ll use the CIP or NAMCO funds that he’s never accounted for.

Who knows, when we’ve got a REACTIVE rather than a proactive Prime Minister in charge.

Your guess is as good as mine boss …

    • Really Really full of shit ( both he and the health monster ): Oh and do not forget these foreign workers have to be housed and transported up and down.
Do I see a chance for creative enrichment?
The IDC is now serving as lodging for Cubans, as well as, a certain mega-complex out in Ebenezer/Jennings !!!
Soooo many local doctors, yet we keep bringing in Cubans doctors instead of trying to treat the doctors at hospital a little more humanely, and paying the doctors within the community better. Treat all nurses better. Fix Graysfarm clinic and restart the 5pm to 9pm service. Fix and expand Pigotts clinic and expand service at the Potters clinic. Polyclinic polyclinic polyclinic my arse, we going in flipping reverse. We gat real specialists in most of the necessary areas, those from Cuban are not comprehensively trained.
??? Nugent Ave ???the medical pavilion that house the cancer center..both are not functioning!!
I don’t think this government is serious about health care. Simple simple steps get overlooked. Maybe the private practices benefit from the state of play. Many private doctors are advisors to the government.
First law of management: One has to first seek to understand!!
Get rid of the minister that lifted the Rolls Royce over the fence now!!! The latter says alot about his character.

    • What they don’t know is that the vubans do not know anything about working at a hospital the ones tgat they send for.

  2. Let’s hope that the doctors will get a relief from that torurous & inhumane 24 to 30 hr shift that they are exposed to. From the ER dept to the wards on the 4th floor, the doctors seem to be all burnt out…. Their shift should be a max of 12 hrs straight & no more…

  3. I wonder if they know that sending for Cuban nurses don’t make much sense… instead of increasing pay they see the need to send for incompetent nurses that do not know how to do anything… the nurses that are sent for clearly never worked at a hospital before but they fit in doing what? Bunch of puppets in the health care system. While the good nurses are leaving the incompetent ones are coming… this hospital soon close down

    • I endorse what you’re saying first they don’t speak and understand English very well most of the time our English speaking nurses have to explain to patience what they’re really saying so working with one put excess strain on the nurse that they are working with

  5. Have Gaston Brown or Sir Molwyn have never heard of the saying, that Charity Begins At Home. How many Antiguan born doctors and nurses are residing abroad. Why try and reach out and offer them an opportunity to return back home to contribute to the land of their birth. The financial output may be great in regards to some of the concessions and benefits that you may have to pay. But is it not better to feed your fellow man rather than a complete stranger. Just asking.

  6. Another irrefutable evidence of this government’s lack of concern for Antiguans and Barbudans. Get this. After the teachers staged industrial action, this is the Ministry of Educations’ response. They wanted a list of names who were engaged in the sit in, and have deducted one week from the teachers’ summer vacation. The rational? Teachers are allowed 13 weeks of vacation per school year and they got an extra one when THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION opted to extend the easter vacation by one week. Vindictiveness at its best. I wonder why the union is silent? Even if this is so by law, publicized it for all the world to see.
Molwyn Joseph needs to explain to us what the hell he did with our 2.16 million cemetery money.
But, I always end with this. We (not me) voted these dumb, crooked, incompetent idiots back into power and must reap what we sew.

  7. You have to find accommodation and transportation for them so the money is that you’re using to do so could pump into the nurses here that are already bending backwards but you are so wicked and evil that you choose to bring in people instead of taking care of your own God doesn’t wear pajama
