The Cabinet on Wednesday announced that it agreed to set aside several 10-acre parcels of crown land for small contractors willing to finance, construct and sell homes.
It was announced that the vacant lands will sell at $3.00 per square foot to the small contractors, who will be compelled to submit their development plans to the DCA (Development Control Authority) for approval prior to the commencement of construction.
It is a condition that roads, drains and sidewalks, running water and electricity, will have to be configured into the public spaces before DCA approval is provided.
The ten-acre plots will be outside of the City of St. John’s; however, the availability the government doesnt see this as a problem as many families have cars.
The Cabinet is of the view that opportunities for small contractors to pool resources and to compete with National Housing ought to be provided, since there is an unquenchable market for new housing.
Those who choose to accept the offer will be granted waivers to import building supplies, capital equipment and fixtures; they will also have certain taxes waived.
Applications are to be placed before the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, situate within the Headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Where did CHAPA find all that portion of crown lands from to sell contractors? As an born Antiguan going back-and-forth to CHAPA checking on my land application for the past 30 years. The response I keep getting from a lady there that no lands available to sell at this time.
That’s always the response….i really need to know what all these ppl who are employed there do on a daily basis when NO land ever is available.
