Criminals renting guns is big business-police

Criminals in Antigua and Barbuda rent guns to their counterparts and share in the spoils, according to police intelligence.

The top cop, Wendel Robinson, said because of this practice, often times the same gun is used to commit multiple crimes, whether it be robberies, homicides or shootings.

“But there are also indications that criminals have guns renting to other criminals and use it, so the same gun may be involved in several criminal activities.

“They rent guns or loan guns to other criminals to commit criminal acts as the case may be and of course they share the spoils. There are evidence to suggest that,” Commissioner Robinson said.

A number of Caribbean countries are grappling with high rates of gun-related crimes and are faced with the challenge of illegal weapons being imported into their borders through Haiti.

It has been suggested that guns make their way from the United States, through South America then to Haiti and onward to other countries in the territory.

Commissioner Robinson said there are indications that some of the illegal guns in Antigua may be coming from some of these countries within the Caribbean.

While illegal firearms making their way into the hands of criminals continues to be a problem, the police have made some inroads in getting guns off the streets.

The police have effected several search warrants and have seized illegal guns and ammunition from private homes, and the perpetrators were arrested, charged and taken before the courts.

A recent amendment to the Firearms Act makes it mandatory for people caught with illegal firearms and ammunition to be jailed for up to two years instead of the option of a fine.

Also, the government as an initiative to get illegal weapons off the streets had granted a one-month gun amnesty which yielded three guns and several bullets -from October 15 to November 15.

  1. Who are they “RENTING” these weapons from? Where/who is the SOURCE/SUPPLIER? Get to the root of the problem. Do NOT try to tackle it at the “surface” level.

  2. Knowing this should then make it easier for the Police to catch the culprits.
Drastic measures should be used to eradicate such actions
