Confirmed COVID-19 cases in Antigua pass 1000 mark

Antigua and Barbuda’s COVID-19  lab-confirmed cases have reached a historic milestone, surpassing the 1,000 mark.

The Ministry of Health released its latest dashboard on Wednesday night, March 17, showing there havebeen 16 new infections.

Consequently, the number of persons officially acknowledged to have contracted the virus since March 2020 stands at 1,008. There are 383 active cases, while 598  people have recovered from the virus, thus far.

Of the latest  batch, Mount St. John Medical Centre tested some 98 samples and the Caribbean Public Health Agency processed 87. These statistics reflect the state of play as of March 16, at 6 p.m.

This year began with a total of 159 cases of the virus.  Hence, in less than three months, almost 850 infections have been officially recorded.

With 27 deaths, Antigua and Barbuda is second only to St. Lucia, which has recorded 55 out of more than 4,000 cases.  Therefore, our mortality rate among COVID-19 patients is 2.67%, the highest in the OECS.

Meanwhile, as the vaccination programme continued with frontline workers, some 391 people received the jab on March 16, bringing the total to 24,904. (Real News)
