Consultations Begin on Project to Install Emergency Sirens on Island

The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) has initiated consultations with key stakeholders for a project aimed at installing emergency sirens in strategic locations across the island. This project is an expansion of the official notification system, the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP).

Local consultant Refica Atwood led the first in a series of consultations on Wednesday morning at the NODS headquarters.

Attendees included representatives from the police and defense forces, the fire department, telecom providers, and the department of gender affairs.

Atwood highlighted that these consultations will draw on the expertise of the technical and telecom sectors to determine the optimal functioning of the sirens once installed.

Discussions are focusing on addressing potential risks, creating a training plan for all stakeholders, and drafting a standard operating procedure.

The siren installation follows the introduction of radio and television interrupters in several media houses, including ABS Radio and Television, Observer Radio, Zoom Radio, and Radio Lighthouse.

Director of NODS, Sherrod James, emphasized the importance of stakeholder input in the project. “Your agencies provide crucial insights on how this should be rolled out, the type of sirens needed, our interaction methods, and how to engage public participation,” said James.

A second consultation is scheduled for next Wednesday, June 19, with another group of stakeholders. The consultative process, the first phase of the project, is expected to conclude by October.

The consultations are funded by the European Development Fund (EDF) project “Building the resilience of the CARIFORUM states to Disaster Risks and Climate Change Impacts” (BRICS), with support from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).
