The Government of Antigua and Barbuda today marked a significant milestone with the groundbreaking of the new Five Islands Primary School.
The project, funded by the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) with additional support from the government, will provide a modern educational facility for the nation’s youth.
The current Five Islands Primary School, located near the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus, is being relocated to accommodate the university’s expansion.
After a competitive bidding process, the construction contract was awarded to Patrice Luke Construction Company. The project is expected to take between 12 and 14 months to complete.
Education Minister Hon. Daryll Matthew, speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasised the importance of creating a state-of-the-art learning environment for students from kindergarten to Grade 6. “This new facility will not only enhance the quality of education but also provide a modern, climate-resilient environment that meets the needs of our growing population,” he said.
The new school, set on 10 acres of land in Five Island Village, will feature 19 classrooms, additional spaces for kindergarten and preschool children, an emergency/sick bay, counselling areas, a library, an IT laboratory, and a modern catering kitchen.
The school will also include age-appropriate bathroom facilities, faculty lounges, and an upper balcony, designed to accommodate up to 600 students.
The new building will incorporate climate-resilient features, including enhanced structural integrity, over 40,000 gallons of water storage, and renewable energy systems.
The Government of Antigua and Barbuda expressed gratitude to the Saudi Fund for Development for its continued support in advancing the country’s educational infrastructure.
The public is advised to observe all safety measures and traffic protocols around the construction site as work progresses towards the completion of the new Five Islands Primary School.
