Dear Editor,

After finishing work at 10 PM, I went to the ATM at Town House. As I drove into the parking lot, I noticed a man dressed in dark clothing with a backpack. He caught my attention, and I continued to watch him as I drove past.

He then said, “Why are you watching me?” As I looked in my rearview mirror, I saw him pull out a cutlass, so I quickly drove away.

I immediately called 911 to report the incident. The dispatcher answered and asked, “What’s your emergency?” I responded, “Good night, could you transfer me to headquarters, please?”

He asked for the reason, and I explained the situation. He transferred my call, but during my conversation with the officer, the call dropped. I called 911 again to reconnect, but this time the dispatcher seemed annoyed and didn’t transfer me. Instead, he gave me a number to call.

I tried calling the number multiple times and even attempted to contact St. John’s Police Station, but all my calls went unanswered. On my third call back to 911, I explained the situation again and asked if he could log the report and pass it to the relevant authorities. At this point, he hung up on me.

It’s frustrating to see that while the police and government officials frequently ask for public assistance in fighting crime, when we do try to help, we are met with indifference.

The 911 dispatcher, who is supposed to coordinate these calls, seemed uninterested in handling the situation once he deemed it unnecessary.

I firmly believe that many crimes on this island could be prevented if the relevant authorities weren’t so complacent. There needs to be a serious shake-up at the top, and actions should be taken before it’s too late—before someone is killed, robbed, or beaten.

Best regards, Sick n Tired
