Community activist speaks out on tragic murder of 16-year-old Yenifer Bridge

15

I join members of my community with a heavy heart and a profound sense of outrage.

The tragic murder of 16-year-old Yenifer Bridge, whose body was found in the vicinity of Fig Tree Hill Drive, has shaken our community to its core.

This horrific crime was not only a senseless act of violence but also a stark reminder of the vulnerability of our young women and girls in Antigua and Barbuda.

Adding to the unspeakable tragedy is the fact that this young mother’s 2-year-old son was left to wander the streets alone, potentially left for dead.

This is not just a crime; it is a devastating loss of life and an appalling display of disregard for human life.

As a community advocate, I am deeply troubled by the response to this horrific event.

A shallow statement from the Attorney General is insufficient. The deafening silence from the Police Commissioner and the Prime Minister leaves our community feeling unheard, undervalued and unprotected.

We cannot allow this to become just another statistic. We cannot accept that a young mother of only 16 years, has been brutally taken from us and her toddler son of 2 years old left to wander on the street, without a fight for justice.

I am calling on the authorities to take immediate action and launch a full and transparent investigation into this heinous crime.

We need to see the urgency, with concrete steps being taken to ensure the safety of our young people, particularly our girls.

I also call on every citizen of Antigua and Barbuda to stand in solidarity with the family of this young victim. Let us show them that we are united in grief and that we will not rest until justice is served.

We must demand accountability from our government, increased resources for law enforcement, and greater investment in community programs that address the root causes of violence. The time for complacency is over.

We need action, we need change, and we need it now!

  1. We can ask for transparency all we want but dont expect any response from the so call police comish so dont give a dam about Antigua ,thats what happen when outsiders get the into jobs they dont give a shit, well as a matter of fact our own dont give a shit much less, just look how them in high places sit back and allow our people to suffer while they live high on the hog, wake up my people we deserve better.

  2. Well said!! I stand by you Mr Edward’s and mainly I stand by this young mother slain and taken from her child!!

  3. This little girl was failed by many.
    1. She got pregnant around 14 or perhaps less taking the age of her child as the fact and the medical professionals didn’t report it.
    2. Education is mandatory in Antigua… Isn’t it? The school she attended and the teachers didn’t report her absence.
    3. Her mom is obviously in the poorer spectrum of our society and I have no clue if her mom would have reported the fact that she was living with and had gotten pregnant by her so-called partner. And if she did, the law obviously didn’t care.

  4. Justice for Loyd as well, woman girl or man justice for all every life is important. The system has fail us tremendously .

  5. What is the point in you calling for immediate action ? What you think police are doing right now idiot. You love put you name inna subn ?

  6. Well said Mr Edward’s we must not take this just so… and we are all standing behind you in solidarity. Never mind the neigh sayers so of them are the same people who commit these type of crimes.

  7. 8. WE NEED JESUS!
“14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 15 Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place. 16 For now have I chosen and sanctified this house, that my name may be there for ever: and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually. ”

  9. Absolutely, hence whether the father of the child is a suspect of the murder or not should be in police custody for getting the child pregnant

  10. the perpetrator(s) will be caught, I know you’re reading the news and trying to cover your tracks…but you can’t erase credible evidence, somebody always sees and knows, so when you’re creeping in the dark be sure to look around…

  11. Lock up the mother for what? She wanted to play big woman before her time and refused to listen to her mother’s warnings so what you expect the woman to do? She didnt expect her child would be murdered.
There are so many teenagers in society behaving just the same some mothers prob give up or some still trying but if its one thing you adults should know is how a child’s mind work because u were once their age, and the children now
Before Jumping on the parent(s) gather the facts and stop degrading them. Some parents try their best and beyond but ‘you can give a child everything all to a mind of his own’ . It will still be up to them how they process information and how they put it out

  12. This is just a political statement.
Some people in Antigua never miss a chance to politicize everything.

  13. Really sad situation. Condolences to her family and friends. However, I am trying to understand the UPP argument re this being caused by a resource issue. I get that the so-called community activist is seeking relevance due to their pollical aspirations but based on the known info so far, should this matter be politicized? If the answer is yes, I have no doubt the AG can provide statistics to show that during his tenure crime has been better handled than during the prior government. Recall them being so lost that they turned to Canadians and then ended up firing the Canadian chief. The situation during Miss Edwards party tenure had us almost as bad as Saint Kitts and Nevis. A recent headline there notes (16th homicide so far this year): “St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has confirmed the murder of Alexis Hendrickson, 32, of Pond Hill, Nevis. The police shared with the media that the homicide took place on the morning of June 25. No specific details about the crime were given at news time.More on this as information becomes available.
This marks the second murder on Nevis for 2024 and the 16th homicide for the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis”
