Community Action leads to Illegal Dumping Clean Up in the Fitches Creek Community

Quick action by Fitches Creek community members has resulted in an illegal polluter being identified and decisive action being taken in removal of the waste material in Fitches Creek, a key biodiversity area within the North East Marine Management Area (NEMMA).

On July 17th, 2024, a member of the Fitches Creek Community observed a concrete truck dumping concrete waste on the corner of a community street and captured it on video. This community member notified the Fitches Creek Residents Association (FCRA) which quickly sprung into action. The FCRA used the licence plate information to report this incident of illegal dumping, which was swiftly cleaned up by the offending party. 

President of the Fitches Creek Residents Association, Mr. Clement Samuel, thanked the resident who captured the violation and reported the illegal dumping. Mr. Samuel noted that,  “This continued vigilance and investment of residents in the Fitches Creek community is the vital action needed to  ensure that our environment is kept safe and clean. This illegal dumping was caught on video, and grants further merit to the installation of several cameras through our current community project which will support us taking swift action”.

This project, which refers to the “Building a Community Constituency for Conservation of Fitches Creek Bay and the North East Marine Management Area (NEMMA)” is led by the FCRA and aims to strengthen community ownership of the NEMMA and Fitches Creek Bay by stimulating community action to protect the community’s status as a protected area, while also strengthening protected area governance through the use of collaborative social accountability approaches.

The project involves mangrove restoration training and planting, a public awareness and education campaign, the installation of community cameras, community cleanups, the selection of environmental stewards and other activities through collaborative community action.

Upcoming activities under the project include a community consultation entitled, “ Dinner and Discussion, to be held on August 27th, 2024 at the St. George’s Anglican Church from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM.
